I'm going to have to agree with the recent rating trend for this beer, or, at least the '07 vintage. Coffee and chocolate in the aroma with a bit of earthiness. Pours absymal black with a small touch of head. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel, somewhat coating and flat. Roasty and lightly caramel flavor, some hops, molasses and quite a bit of alcoholic heat, good flavors, but not well integrated. A nice Imperial Stout, but the Dark Lord still reports to the Yeti as far as I'm concerned.

Toasty and mildy nutty and roasty aroma, very grainy with a bit of wood. Dull brown with a bit of haze and a wisp of foam. Surprisingly well attenuated and not sticky mouthfeel with nice, soft carbonation. Nice, big brown ale flavor, some alcohol heat, a bit of cocoa, nuttiness and lots of toasty malt. A good offering from Stone that has cellared quite well.

This is really more of a fusion between a sweet/oatmeal stout, schwarzbier and a Carnagie style Baltic Porter. It has lots of AB house yeast character matched with cocoa, coffee and sugary sweetness. Slightly sharp carbonation and lacking body, thin enough to put it into Brown Porter if not Dark Mild territory with its watery mouthfeel. Way to over-mash, AB. Still, its not entirely bad, just don't go in expecting Schlafly Oatmeal Stout or Rogue Shakespeare Stout.

Well played, Square One, well played. Hoppy and fruity aroma with a touch of smoky/roasty notes. Dark brown with fleeting eggshell foam. Nice hoppy flavor, richly malty, but a bit too sweet for me, seems under attenuated. A good brew.

Too hoppy to be an IPA, too malty to be a DIPA, but not quite indulgent enough for a Barleywine...American Strong Ale it is! Hoppy, very hoppy aroma with plenty of supporting malt. Pours medium copper with a nice dollop of carbon dioxide which provides a pleasant mouthfeel. Tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, and other citrus with a touch of piney hops and biscuity, toasty malt. A winner from Rogue. Monks may have nothing to do with it, but so what.

  • Kuhnhenn Bourbon Barrel Barleywine

2004 Vintage. Wow! the aroma is unreal, malty with toast, caramel, cocoa, raisins, fig newtons, vanilla, wood, leather, alcohol, bourbon, you can tell this is powerful stuff. Pours a rich copper color with basically no head. Rich and full mouthfeel, with very soft carbonation and significant stickiness. The flavor full reflects the aroma with other very ripe fruits peeking through, along with some rumminess. One helluva powerful brew, a bit unbalanced towards the malt for an American Barleywine, but its hard to recognized such a hedonistic beverage, as this is over top in the most indulgent of styles.

What an odd beer. It pours with a big fizz and lots of gas over a golden body. Very tingly mouthfeel with loads of CO2. The flavor and aroma are very remniscent of 7UP.

Oaky, bretty, funky, fruity and caramelly aroma. Deep copper and hazy with some foam and lace. Very rich woody, fruity flavor, raisins, figs, vanilla and toffee. Quite the Belgian-American treat from JP.

Spicy and nutty aromatics mingle with malty toastiness. Light brown pour with eggshell head. Full carbonation upon the pour, but it settles in with a few minutes becoming gentler on the palate. Mild nuttiness coming through with a touch of tannin, spicy phenolics and some dark fruit, a bit of coconut and some nice Belgian funk to top it all off.

Cool, Biere de Garde, I love it. Bready, grainy aroma, some 'cellar' or 'corked' character or woodiness, mild, spicy hops and it all comes through in the flavor with a bit of clean fruitiness. Not too sweet, but with a bit of caramel flavor.
