51 Arcadia Nut Brown Ale United States Brown Ale 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Caramelly and mild roasty accent the heavily malt oriented aroma, some diacetyl. Brown, tiny head, little lace. Slick...darn that D...and coating mouthfeel. Cleanly malty, roasty and caramelly flavor. Not bad, just not my cup of brew.

52 Goose Island 312 Urban Wheat United States American Wheat 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Well, a rather underwhelming beer from an outstanding brewery in a sometimes lackluster style. Grainy, mildly citric aroma, hazy gold body with a thin film of head that didn't stick around. Thin mouthfeel, but where's the wheat creaminess? Mild grainy and citric flavor. Not bad.

53 Shiner Bohemian Black Lager (formerly Shiner 97 Bohemian Black Lager) United States Schwarzbier 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Had a bottle of this at Trinity Hall in Dallas, TX. After reading Brett and Hannah's reviews I was pretty psyched for it, however this must've been past its prime, or just didn't start out quite right. Mellow aroma, light roast, light malt. Dark brown with a bit of foam...but only for a short while. Thin and kinda slick mouthfeel (was it the D?), a bit watery. Some diacetyl, bit of chocolate and cara-malts, some grain, on the watery side and nothing special, unfortunately. Not bad and drinkable, but not memorable.

54 Lost Coast Winterbraun Ale United States Brown Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Pours with a malty, toasty, mildy roasty and nutty aroma. Clear brown with a stand of eggshell foam. Full and soft carbonation and palate. Toasty and malty sweet, slightly spicy hops, balancing bitterness. A nice beer for keeping the frost off.

55 Bell's Hopslam United States Imperial IPA 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

A very good DIPA with everything you would expect. Backing malts, way behing lots and lots of resinous, citrusy and piney hops, I'm having a hard time identifying them they're so dominant, some fruitness peeking between the tropical fruit and Christmas tree hop flavor and aroma. Thanks to Comstock, MI for showing San Diego, CA they can play the game, too.

56 Rogue FestiveAle (Saison) United States Saison 2.2

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

Eh, I want to blame this one on the Mytrle leaves, so I will. Rough bitterness and out of whack herbal, citrus and spicy (phenolic) flavors were just generally disjointed and unpleasant. Pours deep gold with no foam after just a few seconds despite lots of CO2. Not an excellent work, but I like the offbeat effort, for sure, but I'll be sticking to Santa's Private Reserve.

57 Rogue Oregon Golden Ale United States Blonde Ale 2.9

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Eh, I'd call it more of a misguided pale ale than a blonde ale, but regardless it seemed unbalanced...and to the malty side, no less. How unRogue is that? The cascade bitterness and willamette aromatics peeked through beyond the base and munich malts, however, it just didn't work together. Dark gold body and no foam despite the carbonation. Eh, it just didn't work, but that happens sometimes...

58 Square One Imperial Stout United States Imperial Stout 3.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Well, this is a FES, no doubt about it, an Irish Extra Stout or something along those lines, but not a true RIS, unfortunately. However it is good at what it does, despite not living quite up to the name. Creamy mouthfeel, sure, but its on N, and I really, really hate N...it seems like such a shortcut and I find it detrimental to the true character to the beer...big deductions just for that. Nice and roasty, slight caramel, balancing bitterness. Again, a nice beer, but not a true RIS.

59 Square One Imperial IPA United States Imperial IPA 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

A nice piney, resinous aroma floats over the cloudy, full body, full of hop proteins and not an overly sweet body. The foam stand clings nicely and the mouthfeel coats yet washes away in the hops and carbonation. Huge hop flavor, lots of C hops and loads of resin and oils, a very nice DIPA, but not too far over the top...however big that really is. Well played.

60 Arcadia Bourbon Barrel Shipwreck Porter (Vintages Through 2008) United States Imperial Porter 4.3

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Woody, chocolately, smokey aroma with vanilla, coffee, toffee and rich malt. Dark, dark brown, but not black, oak bark brown foam and rather clear for being so dark. Very smooth and lower carbonation make for a velvety texture. Rich and full flavor totally reflecting the aroma with more smoke, that nice beechwood smoke, not a nasty peaty phenolic...but smooth and warming, along with some alcohol, but its not obtrusive. A very nice, big smokey porter aged in wood. Well played.

61 Arcadia Cereal Killer Barleywine United States English Barleywine 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Pours with a malty and very slightly hoppy aroma. Very clear brown body, tiny cap of foam, very apparently filtered...tsk, tsk. Thinner mouthfeel for a big beer, nice carbonation and coating. Rich malt flavors, munich-esque malts apparent, some backing bitterness, just enough to nearly balance, however the carbonation pick up most of the slack. This seems to need a bit more time in the cellar to round out, however, its prety good...but not outstanding in a strong category.

62 Arcadia Big Dicks Olde Ale United States Old Ale 2.1

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 4

Pours with a spicy and off kilter aroma, where's the malt? or at least the fruit or hops? Brown pour with almost no head. Rather flat, and rather thin mouthfeel, somehow. Ehh, this just seemed off, rather than the old ale it had the chance to be, but at this price...it deserves one more chance, at best.

63 Little Apple Porter United States Porter 2.2

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

Pours with a strong buttery/diacetyl aroma. Deep brown color, no head, no foam, no lacing. Very slick, buttery mouthfeel and a butterscotch/D flavor over tiny hints of roast and caramel. Totally unbalance and I hope this is just an abberation.

64 Avery White Rascal United States Witbier 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Pours with a spicy and fruity aroma over a gold body and white foam which fades rather quick. Effervescent and light mouthfeel. Spicy and wheaty flavor, simple, very light citrus. A good witbier.

65 Avery Out of Bounds Stout United States Dry Stout 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

While arguably my least favorite style...maybe its the narrow definition and strict limitations, this is one damn fine example. Along with Boulevard Dry Stout, this really sets a standard. While thinner in mouthfeel, as it should be, and somehow softly, yet amply carbonated while chocolately, coffee and softly bitter notes shine through...it is clean and nice.

66 North Coast Old Stock Ale United States English Barleywine 4.5

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

11.6% ABV, 2006 Vintage, sampled 1/9/07. A big, potent brew. Fruity aromatics once it warms, like raisins and dried apricots. A huge head and khaki foam in my Maudite glass for an 11.6% English style brew with nice lacing. Rich and full, just like and EBW or OSA should be, while on the drier side, this is rather an accomplishment, as it is still sweet, but the balance is exception, especially for featuring Fuggles. What a way to showcase flavor complexity as compared to temperature. Cold, its merely alcohol and malt, like a bad eisbock. However as it warms, varied fruits and a complex (Fuggles...seriously?) hop flavor come through. I've love to see this a few years down the road...as I'm sure this one will survive with grace.

67 Mendocino Red Tail Ale United States Amber Ale 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Wow! I can see why this is an American classic, in a category which attracts duds and fizzles, this really does set a standard. Citrusy and caramelly aroma, with some fruitiness (peach and pineapple) with very mild spice, all of which is reflected in the aroma. A red/amber pour with nice, fluffy eggshell head and lace, with a coating and effervescent mouthfeel, full, but refreshing. A greatly balanced bitterness and malty complexity. One helluva session ale...I may add, that would make one nice session.

68 Mendocino Eye of the Hawk United States Strong Ale 3.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

A spicy and malty aroma wafts out. A bit flat, even for a bigger beer, but quite clear with some foam and cling. A bit thin compared to other strong ales, however, it is a bit quenching despite its strength. Spicy hops a richer maltiness combine to make this a more mellow bird than some certain gargoyles. A deceptively strong brew and a nice imperialized version of a continental pale ale...

69 Mendocino Blue Heron Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

First sampled from my girlfriend's aunt's fridge during a card game with the family...when you need a drink its good to know a nice beer is in the garage. Pours with a resinously hopppy aroma, but its not knock your socks off. Hazy yellow and a nice head...gloriously unfiltered, thank you, Mendocino. A tad thin and shallow on the pallate, nice carbonation, though. American APA, all the way for flavor, but just watered down compared to some. Its almost like a smaller Two Hearted Ale that didn't fare well in the translation, and by well, I mean as great as that brew is. Anyway, its a damn fine APA, and probably a classic, but not the lead in the Flying V.

70 Schlafly Sorghum (Gluten Free) United States Blonde Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

By a wide margin, the best Sorghum beer and the best gluten free beer I've had. And, not a bad Blonde Ale, at that. An odd graininess to the aroma, although not unpleasant, coupled with some hop spiciness. Thinner mouthfeel, nice for a blonde, refreshing with moderate carbonation. That odd, sorghum grain flavor (despite the use of syrup) and a satisfying hop bite, it definitely tastes like beer, and a Blonde Ale, at that, and a good Blonde Ale, even. Well done, Sean and Schlafly.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

I've had really high hopes for this beer for over a year, and thank the Beer Gods, I haven't been let down. Chocolatly, caramelly, raisiny, and sticky toffee puddy aromatics waft over a dark brown body and KC style BBQ ribs colored brew (the only real BBQ ribs, I might add). Full and sweet, but not cloying, ample but not annoying carbonation. A fine batch, Arcadia. Like chocolate covered raisins with a shot of espresso, rum and a 1/6oz of hop vodka (I know, because I've made it...good stuff, btw). Thank you for delivering on all you promises, Arcadia. I look forward to your other big beers.

72 Uerige Doppel Sticke Germany Altbier 4.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

Well, to put it bluntly, if this is a true Sticke Altbier, then an Altbier is a German Barleywine, which I doubt many would argue with. Richly malty aroma with some Bavarian hop spiciness. Deep copper/brown and some tightly bubbled head. A fine, exceptionally smooth mouthfeel, strong and coating yet clean in the finish...this could make for one great, but far too easily forgettable Oktoberfest. Phenomenally complex and clean malt flavors and spicy hop bitterness, really, words fail me, just drink this beer! Seriously, drink this beer...do it now!

73 Victory Golden Monkey United States Abbey Tripel 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

A beer brewed truely in the Belgian spirit. Very spice and fuller bodied for a trippel, more of a Golden Strong Ale, I would venture to guess...but certainly not the Duvel sense...or maybe a Belgian Specialy Beer...eh, whatever, its Belgian-esque and its pretty darn good, too. Very aromatic, floral and phenolic, like coriander and chamomille, as opposed to black pepper and centennials. Medium gold and a fair amount of foam for the carbonation level. Fuller mouthfeel than most Belgians, but a nice, medium bodied change of pace.

74 Live Oak Liberation Ale United States IPA 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

A nice IPA here, simple and straightforward, kind of like O'Fallon's 5 Day IPA. Some IPAs strive for complexity by leaning on a fruity yeast strain to tie the malt and hops together, but not this class, they are clean, mean and forthright. Hops...check, malt...check. Citrusy, grassy and mild pine aroma, how AIPA of them. Some lace, cloudy gold, small foam stand that faded. Crisp and refeshing mouthfeel, creamy foam (yummy luplin foam). A nice hop showcase with malt to support, bready and a touch dry. I'll have another pint, please.

75 Real Ale Shade Grown Coffee Porter United States Porter 4.5

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

I had this at the Trinity House, Dallas, TX. A great bar and one helluva great beer! Pours with a malty and coffee oriented aroma, chocolate and figs/raisins. Deep, dark brown body, slightly opaque, tan head, very nice lacing for a coffee beer. Velvety body, coating, but not too thick, very nice, and even a bit refreshing. Coffee, chocolate, mild spice and vanilla, dark fruits, clean yet complex, very interesting...a winner, especially in the cold. Its always nice to have a great winter warmer that won't knock you on your ass, and this one is phenomenal.
