Now THAT's a porter!

General Beer Discussion by DAN

Finally, after several porters I've come across one truly worth talking about. Before I begin, let me tell you that I love dry stouts and porters. By far, my favorite two styles. However, my palate isn't quite suited for the sweeter drinks (which is why I'm a huge fan of the perfectly balanced Guinness Extra Stout). Unfortunately, most stouts (and especially porters) seem to be far too sweet, to the extreme. Unlike the stout, the porter is supposed to be a little sweet-- but not to a distracting level. Tonight, thanks to the advice of "E", I had a Stone Smoked Porter and found every sip perfectly balanced. It's like a bittlesweet chocolate melted into expresso-- there's clear hops and malts... beautiful. If anybody is familar with the style, please point me in the direction of nector like this and other dry stouts like Guinness. Thanks again beerpal :)

From what I gather (and through my sampling) you really can't go wrong with anything from Stone. Not a porter fan myself but would love to try that one.

All this porter talk. Dan for dry stouts. Avery Out of Bounds and North Coast Old No. 38 are awesome. Bell's Kalamazoo and Freeminer Deep Shaft stout are also great roasted tasting stouts.

I hear it pairs well with nuts.

We get Stone IPA and Arrogant Bastard around here, but alas, not the Porter. Maybe someday... I've had Boulevard's Bully Porter, and I agree it's one of the best. Another good one to take a crack at is Left Hand's Black Jack Porter. Very nice indeed.

I also like Boulevard's Bully Porter, but for the best of the midwest, I might have to vote for O'Fallon's Smoked Porter. I've never had the Alaskan Smoked Porter, which apparently wins all sorts of awards, but I've been told that O'Fallon's is pretty close to as good.

Nothing against Stone Smoked or O'Fallon Smoked, but Alaskan Smoked Porter blows them both away, IMHO.

Yeah, Stone "Smoked" is good -- that and Anchor are the best I can get around here. I had the Fuller's London Porter a couple times and loved it!
