Wychwood Hobgoblin

The beer pours a clear rust color with an off-white head which lingers for a while. Nutty malt, fresh bread, and caramel make up most of the aroma with light hints of yeast and hops. The flavor is grainy malts, some light toasted nuts, and a yeasty finish. Bitterness is nowhere to be tasted in the finish.

Nose is mild with roasted malt predominating and some dark ripe fruit.Body is light brown with copper hint, fairly still with a moderate camel-colored head that leaves a decent coat and slight lace. Mouth is medium bodied, a touch creamy decent tingle. Flavor profile is round with toasty malts well balanced with fruits esters and moderate resinous hops. Finish is nice with a touch of honey that turns to a slightly sour citrus and it lingers. I think this is going to get better after I let it warm a bit. Yup I am really enjoying this,maybe some prune, some chocolate, some orange,Nice Brew.

I don't think this should be called a strong ale but instead should be called a pale ale. What I found to be different about this beer. Is when I poured it into a glass it had no head . Flavor was pretty good but I won't go out of my way to try it again.

Pours a thick enough creamy off white head. Has a dark amber appearance. Lacing is pretty good. Aromas of light malts and hops, pretty well balanced between the two. Mild hint of caramel as well. Flavours of barley malts, light hops, caramel, hints of chocolate and some mild spices. Also notes of raisins and just a bit of toffee. Very good stuff! Mouthfeel is somewhat creamy, a little bit watery.

Pours thin and dark. Smells of must and grain. Thin mouthfeel but the taste is fantastic. It's like an ESB/ale mix. Clean finish. Highly recommended.

Dark Ruby with solid off-white foam head, lacing to glass. Aroma is fruity and malt. Taste has some chocolate and citrus, yet also nice bitter. Aftertaste is starting off sweet bitter, turning into pure bitter. (Barnsley 201208)

Pours a clear chestnut brown with a nice off white head with some bubbles and has a solid retention and patchy lacing. The aroma is skunky musty hops and nutty, caramel malt. The taste is of caramel malt presence, followed by funky almost vegetal hops.

Wychwood do a good job with their marketing. Their website looks really great and they have worked hard at the dinstinctive branding of their beers. As with all their products, Hobgoblin comes in a eye-catching bottle with an interesting shape and nice artwork. But maybe they should be putting more effort into the beer itself? Poured from the bottle, Hobgoblin is chestnut/mahogany in colour with hints of orange. I was disappointed with the head – short-lived ivory coloured – but I didn’t pour it particularly well. The nose was plummy or even pruney with hints of iron and chocolatey roasted barley. The flavor is not as rich as the nose suggests – it is fairly smooth across the palette (too light really for this style), the dominant flavours being toffee/caramel, a hint of dark fruits and a light spicy hoppiness. It is pleasant enough, but to be honest, the flavour profile lacked any complexity. For this style of beer, you would expect much more to be there. Overall: Decent session ale but nothing special. Apr. 2010 - Medium amber pour with smallish head. It smells like a wet dog and tastes like diacetyl. It had a breadiness and nuttyness to it. If it weren’t for the buttery flavor, it wouldn’t have been half bad. But, alas. I don’t know really what else to say. I wasn’t fond of it.

Respectable amber/brown "tea" color with orange highlights and a slightly off white head with so-so lacing and retention. Semi-clear and not too many bubbles climbing to the top. Earthy malt in the aroma. Some sour dough with a somewhat toasted grain. The grain was very subdued, but in a good way. Picking up what appeared to be some apple butter. Nice change. Noticeably malty with the sour dough showing itself again in the taste. Only slightly bitter and the butter flavor comes along nicely after a few minutes in the glass. Medium, smooth, dry, creamy mouthfeel. Nice enough. Leaves plenty on the palate. This brew is not bad at all. This "old style" is starting to grow on me. Hope I can find a few more like this so I can have something to compare it to. This beer seems to be suited to the Fall season. Glad I tried it.
