At Weyerbacher we've created a Winter Ale that is a must for any malty beer lover. Winner of a Silver Medal in the 1998 World Beer Championships, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is brewed with deep-roasted chocolate malt. The taste predominates with a warm, roasty flavor, balanced out with a slightly dry finish. It's smooth but not cloying, with a warming belt of alcohol. Although winter ales predate history, they are believed to have their origin in the pagan celebrations of winter solstice. Later, when monasteries produced the local brew, winter ales were made each year to commemorate the birth of Christ. Back then, winter ales were brewed full-bodied as a source of nutrition for the upcoming winter months. Today, winter ales are typified by their seasonality, their rich, malty flavors and by their deep, dark coloration. Generally available November-March, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is the perfect libation for a winter meal, with good friends, or aside a warm fire fending off a cold winter night.

Courtesy of Degarth. It pours clear amber with thin tan head. The aroma opens with some mild dark fruity esters mixed with caramel and mild muted spices. The taste begins thinner than I was expecting. I get prunes, dates, raisins, caramel and mild roasted malts. Toward midway and into the finish a murmur of well blended spices and vague hops make an appearance and help take the dark fruitiness and malts into the after taste.

I was expecting a white belgian for some reason. No discription on the label. Surprized by a dark beer in my steeler stien. Very dark red. Not sweet and has a finish with a slightly bitter linger.

Slight, tan head. Beautiful, clear mahoganey colored brew. Caramel, earthy, malt nose. Medium body. The earthyness and malt aromas play large in the flavor profile with some yeasty/breadyness too. Finish is fairly dry. An uneventful brew.

Pours a dark brown color. Smell is of spices, some malts. Taste is spices, cinnamon, chocolate, different but good. Overall this is a unique and tasty beer.

The beer pours a nice redish brown color with a very nice chocolate aroma producing a small white head. The taste was a little to sweet with a malty flavor with hints of roasted chocolate. Not bad but I was under impressed. I was expecting more. Not a bad beer on those long cold winter nites.

This is what I prefer my winter ales to be like. On the darker side, not super spicy with some decent malt to it. Smooth mouthfeel. Flavor and overall almost an 8, but not quite. Only sampled a single to start, as was on clearance for a buck, but this is something I would seek next winter season.

A ruddy brown colored beer with a big foamy textured beige head rising above. There's some hang time. It settles into a thick ringlet and splotches of film. A light nose of licorce and malt. That same profile is a bolder tasting with spices like cloves and cinnamon lighter in the mix. Light bodied and smooth. I like it.

This pours out a dark, clear Coca-cola brown with a light tan, fine-bubbled head. Aroma is not strong, but is appetizing and has a strong overtone of cloves and cinnamon. Flavor is pleasant, malty with hints of sweetness and spice and just a hint of molasses. Texture is smooth so it goes down the hatch easily.

Interesting Ale, it really works nice as a late evening beer to wind down with. Dark brown/amber pour, fluffy light tan head and streaky lacing. Funky aroma of licorice, baking spices, and stale roasted malt. Fairly thin on the palate with a vanishing aftertaste, a little warming and calm. Numerous flavors are jumbled together, pretty complex sipper. Lightly smoked dark malt with a hint of roasted chocolate. Licorice and vanilla with some mild holiday spices. Toffee and burnt malts make an appearance. This drinks more like an Old Ale, either way it's different and pretty interesting.

KCC Rnd 3. Deep amber, almost mahogany color. Tan head fades fast. No lace. Aroma is pungent and musty. Reeks of toe jam or ripe cheese. Aftertaste is sharp and unpleasant, like there's a dissolved asprin in the brew. You never know until you try. I won't be asking for this one again!
