C’est What (Toronto, Ontario, Canada – 67 Front Street West)
550ml draught
8.0% ABV
$7.44
The beer poured a dark brown, almost black with a thin creamy tan head. The aroma is roasted malt, coffee, vanilla, licorice, and chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour is bitter dark chocolate, some licorice, and coffee. Very enjoyable, but not sure it lives up to the hype.

Bottle / Can / Draught. Colour – solid black, tan coloured head, good lacing. Aroma – roasted malt, dark chocolate, and coffee. Mouthfeel – medium bodied, good carbonation. Flavour – roasted malt, coffee, and hints of anise and soy sauce. Could be better

One of the oldest, if not the oldest, craft Imperial Stouts in Canada. I’ve had this beer several times because its’ good, but I’m always wondering why it can’t be better. It’s a black beer with a decent creamy light brown head. Lots of dark chocolate and roasted malt in the aroma and flavour but again, there is something missing

Very dark brown pour. Good tan head thins to a thin layer which lasts through out. Leaves very little lacing. Expected more aroma and body from an Impy Russian. Flavour makes up for what it lacks elsewhere. Roasted malts some licorice and dark chocolate. Ok beer would like to try a draught.

Enjoyed this one on tap at The Rhino Restaurant + Bar on Queen st. in Toronto. Arrived with a nice layer of brownish foamy head. Has a dark brown appearance. Dark roasted coffee grinds in the aroma. A bit of a watery mouthfeel. Weak lacing. For flavours, they are abundant: Chocolate, coffee, mocha, molasses, and hints of nutmeg and a dash of caramel. Pretty good stuff.

First of all, the brewer is Wellington County (no 'r'). This is a dark brown, almost black beer with a thin tan coloured head. The aroma is ALL about the coffee. There is some roasted malt and toffee in the air, but the coffee overpowers all of them. The flavour is more of the same. The roasted malt/coffee combination overpowers them all.

Black. Dark chocolate head - bottle cap thick - made of large bubbles and only lasted 5 minutes. Aroma had the standard qualities: bitter, soft roasted malt, chocolate. It's got a biting bitterness that is strong - it's likely that this is partially due to the 8% alc content - but that would be about the only time that it's even considered. You can really taste the chocolate and roasted malts (I like!). Thin (for a stout) and slighly slippery mouthfeel. Finishes sweet too for a really suprisingly good mouthfeel. A very very drinkable beer.

The beer pours very black with a quarter inch tan head that lasted a couple of minuets, probably would have been a better pour if the bottle wasn't split two ways. A nice sweet aroma that reminds me of chocolate cake, with some dates thrown in the mix too. Flavor was very nice, very rich mostly consisting of bitter coffee and sweet chocolate, and I think I can also taste some faint cherries. The mouth feel was descent but could have been a little thicker. This is a very good beer well crafted and good strong flavor thats not over powering.

Hrm.... what to say. This is a very strong beer, with noticeable sweet soy sauce aroma, which thankfully doesn’t come through into the flavour. Mild alcohol, hardly noticeable when you consider how much is in it. Easy to drink too much without realizing it, I’m sure. Light carbonation helps the flavour come through without a coke-like burn on the palate. Good beer, but takes some getting used to. It took me a whole hour to get through the one bottle.

What can I say...when I lost my beloved Okocim Baltic porter but I found a great substitute! This brew used to come in a distinctive crown topped old style brown liter bottle with a trick looking label with a picture of the iron duke in full dress battle regalia circa 1815. This was perfect to cellar a while.....but now only available in six pack pints. Pours a dark black coffee color that won't let light through a glass. The pour leaves a creamy mocha cap that stacks out of the glass then this reduces halfway through the drink to a delicate tan lace. The brew gives definitive odors of coffee, spice, cocoa and sweet roasted maltyness, licorice and molasses to the nose. Starts big and rich with an oily-cream mouthfeel up front...melts into a delicious complex mix of toasted malt sweetness balanced with just the right hop astringency to produce some complex mocha-spice-dried fruit tastes...then the finish is medium dry...just perfect.....a world class craft ale. This beer cellars well and I can attest to the fact that a year or more will bring out the more complex tastes. This is one of the few imperial russian stouts available in bottles in Canada and arguably the best.
