Five is a farmhouse pale ale that was born after enjoying a few small production European brews that use a heavy hand of hops. Ours blends several Mt. Angel grown varieties to create a deep and complex flavor with an underlying earthiness. Pale fruit aromas created during the fermentation brighten the profile and bring the beer balance. Malts: organic pale, organic caramel Unmalted: rolled barley Hops: willamette, liberty, perle Also: xanthohumol (bottles only)

750 ml bottle, a bit of a slow gusher. Pours hazy golden orange with a huge growing bubbly white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is sweet wet grains with some soapy hops.
The flavor is sweet woody grains and light fruit with green hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with sharp carbonation.
Overall, a decent saison. Very easy drinking with nice hops. -

Seems like a pale ale base all farm housed up. Nicely done though not a standout. Crisp and lightly hoppy. A little barnyard going on, but subtle. Another that is good but too much in the 750 format. I like 5 & 6 better.

Copper colour, bright, bitter, yeasty and tart! Awesome! Lots of bright lemony hops, orange, peach, maybe even something like a tart apple. Well carbonated, clean, crisp, cant say really anything bad about this beer, a cool re-interpretation of many of the saisons that I have had, and really took my out of the belgian hate-on funk I had been in. NICE!

It's been awhile since I had a saison this enjoyable. From the subtle tartness, to the yeast and phenolic 1-2 punch, and the overall brightness of this beer....a damn fine beer to be enjoying on hot California afternoon.
Darker than usual for a saison, it pours out a cloudy copper color with a rich, thick merengue-like head. Aroma is floral, zesty-hops, yeasty...lots of phenols and fruit. The acidic bitterness of this beer on the palate is soooo refreshing. Like the essence of fruit without the cloying sweetness. Reminds me almost of a Belgian ale combined with a saison (aren't they almost one and the same?). Worth every penny at $10/bottle. -

I drank this at the same time as Upright Four, at the brewery, and this one was much darker and bolder in every way. More of an amber color with more foam and very nice lacing. Aroma is more farmhouse and grainy with hints of citrus and flowers. No tartness or funkiness like the previous reviewer found. I wonder if having this fresh at the brewery didn't allow those qualities to build up, or maybe this is how it's supposed to be? All in all, it's a very nice beer, but hardly extreme for the style.

Sampled on 1/29/2011. This saison pours a deep orange gold color from a 750ml bottle. Large, make that freaking huge, sized white foamy head with a long lasting retention. The aroma is orange, fruity, yeasty, spicy and sweet. A medium bodied saison. The malts are fruity, sweet, orange and peaches and somewhat tart. The hops are floral and spicy. Nice carbonation. The tartness in the taste is not in the aroma. I do wonder if that tartness is supposed to be here or not, but I kind of like it, so I won’t investigate further. A light and refreshing saison, with a finishing tartness that tends to linger. There is a little bit of funkiness at the finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly tart and a little funky.
