Among beer geeks these days (and we use that term affectionately) there’s a big emphasis on “fresh” beer. Beer lovers are paying closer attention to the date printed on the can or bottle and making sure to consume the contents in a timely fashion—to ensure the maximum flavor-experience. In the case of our annual Vintage Ale, the precise time for consumption is more flexible. That’s because this strong, dark, Belgian-style ale—made for us by seasoned Canadian brewers—has an additional bit of fresh yeast added to it just before bottling. This causes a second fermentation in the bottle, leaving behind “lees” (sediment) that add much to the flavor and mouthfeel and protect the beer from the stale flavor that comes from oxidation. And since this beer is not pasteurized, the original aromas and flavors (cocoa and malt, with notes of citrus, ginger, and baking spices) evolve over time to gain even more complexity. Drink it now and you’ll definitely be pleased—whether pairing it with roasted meats and potatoes, or with a slice of Nantucket Style Cranberry Pie. Drink it later (even years later!) and you’ll find that when stored properly (upright in a cool, dark place), Trader Joe’s Vintage Ale will have matured into an even more interesting (and vintage) ale

Bottle from Trader Joe's in Burlington, VT that pours a dark colour, almost black as hard to find highlights. The head is bubbly, almost creamy with good retention and lots of lacing. Spicy nose over roasted malts that give out dark fruit notes. Eventually, hints of mint appear. The taste shows nice spices throughout the mild dark fruits. The ending lingers maple syrup, but not overly sweet, nor syrupy. Goes down very swell.
