Sometimes things get a little weird when there’s a full moon. Floating into “Side Project 22″ comes “Moonray” Chocolate Orange Weizenbock. Our rendition of this traditional style is clearly a hoax with the addition of cocoa nibs and orange peel for a greater depth of flavor. With its big malt presence and hint of banana from the yeast, this beer may just make you howl at the moon.

Pours an opaque chocolate brown with a fairly thick light tan head. Aroma has orange and cocoa notes, tempting if not strong. Flavor starts with a malty core and adds notes of cocoa, banana, and orange, plus a hint of caramel. Finish is chocolaty with snippets of fruit and a touch of yeast. Texture is thick and smooth, though fizz leaves a little to be desired. An interesting bock I dare say. Bock at the moon!

Strange brew. Not sure it would work, especially after the first sip or two, but grew on me towards the end. Flavors open up as it warms a bit. Orange flavor is mild. Chocolate gives it some added texture and combines nicely with the taste of wheat. Almost porter-ish. Medium murky brown appearance. Interesting and pricey...glad I tried though.
