Ebony-hued, Smoke wafts out of the bottle and into your senses, borne on the wings of European traditions, wrapped in American innovation. Lager-brewed, like any true Baltic Porter, with smoked malts from Bamberg, Germany, the home of Rauchbiers, then mellowed by oak-aging. Black malt flavors mesh with notes of raisins, plums, figs and licorice with the subtle smoke on the side, for a complex and luxurious, yet silky smooth drinking experience. It's a sipper at Alc. 8.2% by VOL., but everyone knows you can't have Smoke without fire!

Pours deep coffee with a fair ivory head. Aroma yields smoky, roast malt, chocolate and subtle coffee tones. Flavor gives all of the above. Texture provides firm body and lively fizz. Get smoked - but not TOO smoked.

Holy Smoke! Big Ass smoke beer: Blacky brown pour, tight head and lacing. Rich smoky nose and flavors, ripe fruits, cherries, smoke, licorice and molasses, smoke, slight bacon, smoke, sweet malts, smoke, then some more smoke. GREAT change of pace from anything else I've been drinking. I could use these at all of my BBQs.

A delicious brew, better even than I expected. Rich, malty and full bodied. Ample cherry like smoke without being overdone. Quite the decadent brew, more doppelbock than Baltic porter me thinks.

Bottled late last to early this year. Pours an extremely creamy black with a decent sized chocolate brown head. Aroma is like that of a stout or porter. Taste is of roasted coffee, nuts and chocolate with a slightly dry aftertaste. Overall a good beer but not something I will have all the time. Besides they plastic dipped the top of the bottle and it too 10 minutes for me to open. Will have again.

Aroma is very mild for a smoked beer, also very roasty like a good porter, so far living up to the billing. Appearance is very dark brown, the head was underwelming. Mouthfeel is a little thin for such a big beer. The flavor was great, full of roasty smoke and licorice and booze. I would certainly pick this up again.

750 ml bottle, kindly shared by gunnar. ABV was 8.2%. Black colour, moderate beige head. Smoky aroma, notes of tar and bonfires at the seaside. Smoky flavour, notes of smoked meat and roasted malts.

Pretty rich smokey beer from Surly. Had this on tap in Chicago and although my review was a bit vague, I described it in this manner: Dark brownish black. Big campfire smokiness with a full meltdown of chocolate, smores, black licorice and barbecue. Noticeable boozer. But pleasent all around!
