Finally, a Surly beer my German mother will drink. She says this one tastes like a bier from back home. Not unlike a Zwickel Bier from Germany, Hell is our filtered and fermented with lager yeast, American hops takes a back seat to the Pils malt sweetness and fresh bread aroma. The color is well... hell (Deutsch for light). It’s fiendishly drinkable, and you don’t have to sell your soul to get another.

Small white head, fair retention and lace. Hazy, gold colored Lager. Nose of wet grains and grass, worty, honey. Body is light, yet full, brisk on the palate, hint oily and coating. Just a lightly sweet, grainy brew with a mild grassy hop backing. Nothing fancy but seems to be well done. Finish is a touch sweet with a slight bitterness but probably right for the style. maltOrama! Can from footbalm! Thanks buddy!

Rated Aug. 2010. Can courtesy of goryshkewych. Pours deep clear gold with thin white head. The aroma is full with grains, floral hops, spicy hops and slick sweet lagery-ness. The taste is similar with bold yet refreshing grains and malts rolling into bitter spicy hops and then softened a bit by floral and earthy hops toward the finish. It ends with a pulse of sweet malty lagery yeastiness.

Pours clear, bright solar yellow with a thick and fairly lasting parchment head. Aroma offers crisp raw malt, zesty apple and resiny hops. Flavor features resiny and bitter hops, fresh malt, some sweet apple on the back end. Texture provides fair body and fizz. Hella tasty.

A cloudy golden colored beer with a big frothy textured, white head rising above.  There's good hang time on the head.  Maintains a thick cap throughout this sitting.  A grainy, grassy nose and tasting.  A light bitterness balances this out well and makes for a fresh, crisp refreshing tasting beer.

A dark golden beer with a beige head. The aroma has notes of malt and straw. The flavor is sweet with notes of straw and malt. Not as good as you get Kellerbiers in Germany.

The style of this beer isn’t one that is often talked about currently. IPAs, barrel-aged, sours, are dominating headlines with most craft beer drinkers but if you want to try different styles and try them when they are done right, I think Surly can be proud of this beer. This could also quite possibly be a great transition beer for those looking to get into the craft beer world. Rumblings of Surly wanting to expand a bit continues through the midwest and here’s hoping that they make it south to the lovely state of Iowa. REVIEW Style: Hells/Dortmunder ABV:4.5% Purchased at: France44.com Pour: Golden straw color with a thick white head. Aroma: Bread, yeast, light citrus. Flavor: Lots of breadiness with lemon and bit of hops. Ratebeer.com rating: 90/100 Beeradvocate.com rating: 88/100 Overall: B My recommendation: A great beer for the style, extremely drinkable. Surly continues to do things and if you can get up north to Minnesota to get some, buy a bunch, or order from france44.com.

A great craft lager courtesy of heybeerman. Clear golden yellow pour with strong carbonation and a huge head with hefty lacing, looks incredible. Soft and light, balanced with a pleasing hop presence. Aroma is fairly faint, but the flavor steps it up a notch. Grass and biscuits with a floral/fruity/spicy hop combination.

Pours a rich golden color. Smell is sweet and malty. Taste is crisp, malts, some grains, a touch of sweetness, very refreshing. Overall a great summertime beer.
