Finally, a Surly beer my German mother will drink. She says this one tastes like a bier from back home. Not unlike a Zwickel Bier from Germany, Hell is our filtered and fermented with lager yeast, American hops takes a back seat to the Pils malt sweetness and fresh bread aroma. The color is well... hell (Deutsch for light). It’s fiendishly drinkable, and you don’t have to sell your soul to get another.

A cloudy golden colored beer with a big frothy textured, white head rising above.  There's good hang time on the head.  Maintains a thick cap throughout this sitting.  A grainy, grassy nose and tasting.  A light bitterness balances this out well and makes for a fresh, crisp refreshing tasting beer.

A dark golden beer with a beige head. The aroma has notes of malt and straw. The flavor is sweet with notes of straw and malt. Not as good as you get Kellerbiers in Germany.

The style of this beer isn’t one that is often talked about currently. IPAs, barrel-aged, sours, are dominating headlines with most craft beer drinkers but if you want to try different styles and try them when they are done right, I think Surly can be proud of this beer. This could also quite possibly be a great transition beer for those looking to get into the craft beer world. Rumblings of Surly wanting to expand a bit continues through the midwest and here’s hoping that they make it south to the lovely state of Iowa. REVIEW Style: Hells/Dortmunder ABV:4.5% Purchased at: France44.com Pour: Golden straw color with a thick white head. Aroma: Bread, yeast, light citrus. Flavor: Lots of breadiness with lemon and bit of hops. Ratebeer.com rating: 90/100 Beeradvocate.com rating: 88/100 Overall: B My recommendation: A great beer for the style, extremely drinkable. Surly continues to do things and if you can get up north to Minnesota to get some, buy a bunch, or order from france44.com.

16oz can by chimney .. . pours a slightly hazy gold .. medium head, medium to strong lacing .. . clean and simple, light for a keller but so easy to drink .. . the milkman said, you want that milk pasteurized? .. no said the blonde, just up to my boobs- i can splash it in my eyes...

A great craft lager courtesy of heybeerman. Clear golden yellow pour with strong carbonation and a huge head with hefty lacing, looks incredible. Soft and light, balanced with a pleasing hop presence. Aroma is fairly faint, but the flavor steps it up a notch. Grass and biscuits with a floral/fruity/spicy hop combination.

Pours a rich golden color. Smell is sweet and malty. Taste is crisp, malts, some grains, a touch of sweetness, very refreshing. Overall a great summertime beer.

Crystal clear yellow/gold beer, very thoroughly filtered. Very bready aroma, lightly hopped. Flavor is pretty trueto the Munich helles style, light and easy to drink. This is the most tame Surly beer I have ever had, very unlike their other offerings. No cutting edge style here but very traditional.

This is a very tame beer compared to their normal brews. Pours a light amber with a big beautiful head. Highly carbonated but you don't feel it. Taste is very mellow and extremely drinkable. For what it is it is an excellent hot day beer. Will drink again and again.

Hard to believe this is a Surly beer since it is so tame. Pours a light gold with a thin white head, much like a macro lager. Aroma is sweet and grainy with a hint of lemons and flowers. Taste is very mild and highly drinkable.

Number 4 in my GTMW favorites: Poured a bright golden colour with lots of carbonation. Nice large white head with instant aroma of fresh hops and noticeable corn/malty notes. Despite that it maintains a pretty firm, fruity mouthfeel. full and spritzy with some lemon zest and pear notes.
