Stoudt's Fat Dog: From Pennsylvania's preeminent micro-brewery, the Fat Dog is a fusion of traditional British-style Stouts. This unique bottle conditioned ale merges the smooth complexity of Oatmeal Stout and the extremely rich maltiness and assertive hoppiness of Imperial Stout. The Fat Dog has an inviting silky black color, and a prominent roasted malt character, with a chocolaty coffee-like finish. Pair with spicy dishes & shellfish.

(Trade with someone. Unfortunately, I don’t remember who) Small tan head. Dark body, resembling Coca Cola. Aroma of fresh soy sauce. Combination of flavors. Some of that soy, along with chocolate and brown sugars. Perhaps some lightly toasted coconut as well? Only minimally roasted. Slightly heavier than normal mouthfeel. Good hop backbone that tames the amount of malt that’s in there, especially in the aftertaste. Could see adding this to my cellar again sometime.

12 oz bottle, 2005 version. Rich chocolate –syrupy-licorice and then oatmeal aroma. Black color with brown head. Taste is smooth creamy toffee and then grainy oatmeal then roasted dry chocolate malts followed by some hop bitterness. A full flavor indeed. No alcohol present in the first 6 oz. and just a hint later. The body is real good. I can’t find any faults with this beer. Nice job. Will definitely have it again.

Imperial and oatmeal? Odd mixture; we all know that oatmeal is a sweet stout, right? 12 oz brown bottle as pictured. Has a sweet initial aroma when you pop the lid and that goes into a roasty volatile alky stout smell. Watch out, the smell says it is a killer. Pour is viscous black, like used shovelhead oil. Bitter syrupy chocolaty flavor coats the inside of your mouth, yeowee! Tho it does have a bitter palate compared to most imp stouts it is not tremendously oppressive, almost doable! Wow, that aroma is quite an alky kick with each lift to the lips. I swear that I am catching an alky buzz right off the odor! If you ignore the aroma the taste is rather interesting. Burned bitter back of throat impact but again not terribly bitter. Probably one of the easier imp stouts to drink. Almost on par with Old Heathen! Better(IMHO) and more enjoyable than Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout and Brooklyn Black Chocolate. Hey am I finally developing an appreciation for impy stouts? NO WAY! This stuff is still pretty acrid, just less so than most in this style. But it comes across as above average!

2009 batch from Cory in OH. outside of the aroma, this was a super nice beer. the aroma was flat and boring, but the beer was SUPER smooth. the flavor of roasted oats and coffee would make this a good breakfast beer, with a nice semi-sweet finish.

Black pour with a thin beige head which leaves a sustained ring throughout. Little lacing, creamy mouthfeel. Toasted malts, a touch of molasses, a touch of black coffee. Molasses and toasted malts then some bitter coffee in the taste. Very nice and warming.

Pours opaque dark-chocolate brown with a fairly thick, pale tan head. Aroma is richly smoky with firm tones of molasses and fine roast coffee, fairly sweet but not cloying. Lip-smacking flavor is mainly of molasses and roast coffee with hints of licorice and unsweet chocolate. Texture is very smooth, yet fizzy and lively.

why would you choose the ugliest dog and then put him on your label.. nice stuff, aged about a year .. oily and black, decent mouthfeel .. a little muddled but i can see what it was going for, i am an onion! .. would love to try a fresh bottle.. .

bottle: Pours as dark as the taxman’s heart with a gorgeous tight mocha head that will support a dime. Aroma is like a dried fruit wine (port?) with some bready and roasty tones...excellent! This is a big beer as in the palate. Must be the oats but this is like a bulked up ( in the body) Russian impy. All the great nuances of dried fruits, roast cocoa and malt but it has this big fat mouth feel. Long ’fat’ finish where we get some licorice. Damn fine effort.

Wow, what can I say! Don't know if I have tried a better oatmeal stout yet. Has an off-black, thick appearance. Medium-heavy carbonation to bring out a frothy mocha-white head. Taste of oats, chocolate malts, hops, and all sorts of other goodies. Can't wait to buy more. UPDATED ON 8/4/09....bottled on 1/29/08. This one was aged a bit. Still as good as I remember. Have some other IPS to try, like Stone Russian Imperial, so waiting to try something better than Fat Dog.
