Stoudt's Fat Dog: From Pennsylvania's preeminent micro-brewery, the Fat Dog is a fusion of traditional British-style Stouts. This unique bottle conditioned ale merges the smooth complexity of Oatmeal Stout and the extremely rich maltiness and assertive hoppiness of Imperial Stout. The Fat Dog has an inviting silky black color, and a prominent roasted malt character, with a chocolaty coffee-like finish. Pair with spicy dishes & shellfish.

2009 batch from Cory in OH. outside of the aroma, this was a super nice beer. the aroma was flat and boring, but the beer was SUPER smooth. the flavor of roasted oats and coffee would make this a good breakfast beer, with a nice semi-sweet finish.

Black pour with a thin beige head which leaves a sustained ring throughout. Little lacing, creamy mouthfeel. Toasted malts, a touch of molasses, a touch of black coffee. Molasses and toasted malts then some bitter coffee in the taste. Very nice and warming.

Pours opaque dark-chocolate brown with a fairly thick, pale tan head. Aroma is richly smoky with firm tones of molasses and fine roast coffee, fairly sweet but not cloying. Lip-smacking flavor is mainly of molasses and roast coffee with hints of licorice and unsweet chocolate. Texture is very smooth, yet fizzy and lively.

bottle: Pours as dark as the taxman’s heart with a gorgeous tight mocha head that will support a dime. Aroma is like a dried fruit wine (port?) with some bready and roasty tones...excellent! This is a big beer as in the palate. Must be the oats but this is like a bulked up ( in the body) Russian impy. All the great nuances of dried fruits, roast cocoa and malt but it has this big fat mouth feel. Long ’fat’ finish where we get some licorice. Damn fine effort.

Wow, what can I say! Don't know if I have tried a better oatmeal stout yet. Has an off-black, thick appearance. Medium-heavy carbonation to bring out a frothy mocha-white head. Taste of oats, chocolate malts, hops, and all sorts of other goodies. Can't wait to buy more. UPDATED ON 8/4/09....bottled on 1/29/08. This one was aged a bit. Still as good as I remember. Have some other IPS to try, like Stone Russian Imperial, so waiting to try something better than Fat Dog.

The fat dog sang on this one. The beer really isn’t as bad as the humor. Ebony brown and tan head on pour. The head was a little light on retention. The nose offered a sweet acidity. The flavor of chocolate and malt was complexed with bitternes. That astringent alcohol finish takes a little something off the finishing touch.

I've had a six pack of this for a while now and have been enjoying a bottle or two every once in a while. A late season snow storm seemed like a fitting setting to enjoy a couple bottles of this calming stout. A very dark brown pour with a slight red tint around the edges. Large settling khaki colored head with an abundance of splotchy lacing. Prominent straightforward aroma of burnt toast and roasted coffee along with heavy cream and mild chocolate. Rich and sweet on the palate, this beer is exceptionally creamy and filling. Good bitterness with a complimentary faint alcohol presence. Warming, inviting flavor of creamy milk chocolate, burnt roasted malts, and nuts. A lingering bitterness reinforces the strong flavors. Hints of molasses, black licorice, and light sugar are noticed. Another well crafted Imperial Stout, man I love this style.

Very impressive brew, I thought. This was a deep brown, nearly black. The only thing that was disappointing was the lack of a head at all. The aroma was a very nice blend of roasted chocolate, caramel and oatmeal. Coupled with that was a delicious taste. I really thought this was one of the best Stoudt's brews that I sampled.
