This ninth edition of our Stone Vertical Epic Ale series takes two interesting left turns. A Belgian-style golden triple is the starting point of this beer, but the first left turn is nearly immediate with the addition of dried chamomile flowers, triticale, and Belgian amber candi sugar. The second, and rather unusual left turn takes us half an hour up the road from Stone to Temecula courtesy of the addition of just-pressed Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from our friends at South Coast Winery. As the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series has moved through the calendar, we found that the brewing schedule for a 10.10.10 release coincided nicely with the grape harvest, neatly providing an interesting twist in this epic ale.

Rated in Nov. 2010. Bomber pours gold with nice nearly bright white head. The aroma fairly smooth with modest levels of sweet banana, sweet pears, spicy yeast, some lemon like citrus, a bit herbal spiced green tea like and then a bit perfumy. The taste is pretty soft and smooth and offers up banana and pear then moving into yeasty spices, cloves, a faint pepperiness as well as a touch lemon grass and faint acidity. The yeast seems to coat the mouth creating a near creamy pillowy finish. I’m not sure where this is going with age but it is pretty darn nice right now.

My neighbor brought this over because we invited them over for supper, will I guess I win this round. Mildly hazy gold with a small good sized white cap. Not Bad aroma, mild white wine, orange, pepper, yeast, more and other stuff. Strong tasty brew, peppery, yeast, lemon, lightly tart. Has a good bite with a long, soft finish. Overall this has a good Belgium feel to it. Thanks to VBS for basically righting this review since I took piss poor notes when drinking this earlier this afternoon.

One of the more intriquing of the Vertical Epics sampled during the tasting. Light golden body with a copper tint, lifeless head and some spots of lacing. Juicy, dry and sweet all at once. A barnyard fruitiness throughout that worked well. Notes of white wine, applesauce and some minor hop bitterness.

It pours a hazy golden with a thin white head and a ring of lacing. Seems like an aroma of wheat malts, oranges and citrus, tart apples, bread and biscuits, bananas, and an arrangement of spices. The mouthfeel is smooth, thick, and rich. Flavors of fresh malts, hops, orange and citrus, tart apples, breads and biscuits, light peach, grapes, and spiciness. Mmmm..

Having now had all the Vertical Epics I’ve learned this. Dark belgians Stone does ok with, golden ones not so much with the exception of Stone 020202. Anywho this poured a golden color with a white head. The aroma contains some lemons, ginger, and other annoying spices. Maybe some honey? The flavor is rather sweet with some lemons, honey, caramel, and spices. Overall this is ok and certainly not as bad as the 070707 turd.

This was one of the beers I tried at the Oregon Garden Brewfest a couple weeks ago. Clear gold with a medium white had and OK lacing. Lightly fruity and hoppy aroma. Fairly smooth considering the alcohol. Pear sweetness with a well balanced hop finish. It was good but I didn't find it very exciting. Maybe I was biased because Stone was supposed to have the Sublimely Self Righteous Ale at the brewfest but showed up with this one instead, which upset me.

This one from JLozier a few months back. Mostly clear golden orange pour with a smallish head which reduces to a thick ring and thin cap leaving tight lacing. Aroma a'plenty - floral, with the chamomile coming through with some honeysuckle, yeasts, candi sugar, sour grapes - not really wine-like but more tangy - very pleasant nose. Taste is lightly tart upfront with the sour grapes coming through then floral and sweet finishing with a light tart linger. Very tasty and nicely different. Thanks Jayson for another Stone winner.

A really good beer. Pours a nice light amber color with maybe a hint of orange and minimal head. Very light aroma, some malt and apples and wine. The mouthfeel is thick and heavy with flavors of sour grapes, apples and lots of malt.

Bottled@omhpertasting. Golden colour with a small white head. Aroma is very fruity, mildly alcoholic as well as a bit yeasty and spicy. Flavour is much the same in a rather balanced way. Pleasant and nice sipper.

Pours a dark tan, great foam .. . interesting stuff .. in my day, we'd call it walking bird .. . definitely has some wine qualities, along with flowers and some sweet grain .. . a nice brew, but not savin .. . then we'd all sit down and watch football, which in my day we'd call baseball ...
