The abbey beer Steenbrugge Dubbel Bruin is a brown beer with a busty caramel malt character and a fruity, slightly smoked fermentation aroma in combination with the subtle Bruges herb mixture 'gruut', with emphasis on cinnamon. Beer of high fermentation. The secret of Steenbrugge abbey beer is the unique ?gruut? blend of herbs and spices, which gives the beer its delicious flavour. Every town used to have its own beer, each with its own individual character. In Bruges that character was determined by a blend of herbs and spices that brewers were obliged to purchase from the city?s herbs and spices shop, known as the ?Gruuthuse?. In Steenbrugge Dubbel Bruin this medieval tradition is continued. Steenbrugge Dubbel Bruin is fermented with its own Steenbrugge top-fermenting yeast strain, which provides a smoked, phenolic aroma, together with a discernible fruitiness. Clear darker ruby with light brown foam head. Aroma is pretty sweet, taste as well. Caramel and sugarish. Good, but not the best double ever tasted. Short sweet aftertaste. (Velp 201302)

Strong, malty aroma has a firm fruity note and a hint of cloves. Pours a dark, somewhat transparent chestnut with a thick and fine-bubbled light tan head. Well-rounded malty, fruity flavor has hints of cloves, caramel and woody hops and just a nip of alcohol. Smooth texture has good, firm body and some fizz, leaving a malty finish that has touches of caramel and cloves. Gotta love them monks.

A deep brown, reddish tinged colored beer with a big frothy textured, light beige head rising robustly above. There's pretty good hang time on this one. It settles into a thick, soapy ringlet. The nose and tasting are of dark fruits and brown sugar. A thick body, nearly oily on the tongue. Overall a very good beer.

What started out as a solid pour quickly had to be throttled way back, but I still ended up with four-fingers worth of lightly amber tinged, tan colored head in my 25cl tulip glass. The beer is a dark, red plum color that shows an absolutely brilliantly clear, deep red color (and even some gold around the edges) when held up to the light. The aroma smells of red wine soaked raisins, some earthy toasted malt notes, musty almost muddy malt character, plum / prune (almost reminds me of Dr. Pepper), as well as a note of diacetyl that contributes some not quite rancid butter notes as the beer warms up a bit. The diacetyl is actually fairly soft here, but I can be a bit sensitive to it and it definitely seems a bit out of place here. The beer has a sweet dark fruit flavor to it up front that reminds me of concentrated plums, raisins, and perhaps even some berry or currant notes. There is a touch of butterscotch to the finish as well as a peppery carbonic bite and a spicy, phenolic clove note. The body is pretty light and about spot on in quaffability for the style. The diacetyl gets a touch more aggressive than butterscotch after a bit, though it is always fairly light and I could see many people missing its contribution entirely.
Interesting, I definitely wasn’t expecting the diacetyl (especially since it is lacking in their other beers), but even without it this would still be a fairly lackluster beer (though it would be drinkable at least); with it though this is a definite pass.

330 ml bottle, as Steenbrugge Dubbel Bruin, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 6.5%. Dark reddish brown colour, huge beige head. High level of carbonation. Moderate but nice aroma of candi sugar, malts, caramel and spices. Fizzy mouthfeel. The flavour is malty with notes of brown sugar, dried dark fruits and moderate spices. Not too sweet. The finish has noticeable hops and is slightly woody. OKish.

Pitch dark brown colour, big brown head, lacing. Aroma is raisin, metal slight malts and plum. Flavour is very metallic with nuts, chocolate, caramel and malts in it. The metallicness is so strong it ruins the beer. Not even passed it’s prime, as the stated BBE is 08/08... Long metallic aftertaste.

Dark clear amber colour with a nice creamy off white head. Aroma is promising; malty, dark fruits, caramel and chocolate. Lots of fruit and spices in the taste along with well balanced sweet malts and hops. Quite lively on the tongue, smooth with a tasty dry finish. Very good.

A nice belgian brown. Nothing special. Average in it's class, which of course means it's pretty good.
