Back in 1995, Phil headed to Düsseldorf, Germany to taste the famous Altbiers of the region. The “true” Altbiers are only brewed in, and around, Düsseldorf with very limited availability outside northern Germany. To really get to know these uncommon brews you have to go to the source. It was on that trip that Phil developed a passion for Altbiers and returned to the States to master this unique hybrid beer style. Altbiers are traditional German copper-brown ales. Prior to the isolation of lager yeasts in the mid 1800s, all beers in Germany were brewed using ale yeasts. The term “Alt,” which literally means “old” or “antique,” is a reference to types of brews made before lagers revolutionized the brewing world. Ale yeasts typically ferment at higher temperatures than lager yeasts and result in products that tend to have a little more fruitiness in flavor and aroma. Southampton Altbier is made with ale yeast but fermented at cooler temperatures similar to lager beer. This results in an ale with less pronounced fruitiness than most ales. Additionally, Altbiers are aged cold for a longer period of time, again similar to lagers. This more expensive and time consuming process tends to dry out the beer and give it a cleaner, lager-like finish. Hence the term “hybrid” beer. With this “best of both worlds” approach, Phil produces an Altbier that has some of the most favorable characteristics of both ales and lagers. Since returning from Düsseldorf, Phil has brewed multiple award-winning Altbiers and has saved his best effort for Southampton Altbier. Phil uses four grains and two hop varieties to make his delicious brew. The flavor is predominantly malty with a subtle herbal hop note and a faint crisp fruitiness from the ale yeast. It has a malty flavor, refreshing hop character and finishes clean like a lager— you’ll want more!

The local altbier of choice in NYC, and for good reason. It’s an easy drinking variant of the style. A clear reddish gold pour, lively carbonation, and a decent sixed rocky off-white head. Lots of sweet malty notes on the nose, along with herbal hops and weak yeast. Mouthfeel is full bodied and rich. Flavor is the same. Nice malty sweetness up front, nuce dry hoppy finish in the end. A great beer.

Aroma is strong and malty with a nice smoky undertone and a hint of molasses. It pours a clear coppery brown with a rather thin head. Malty flavor has just a whisper of molasses and a bit of a tinny hint. Texture is smooth, not very tingly, a bit on the thin side. OK nonetheless.

Pours out in a crystal clear brownish amber appearance with a firm rocky off-white head. Earth, caramel, nuts and mild dried fruits in the aroma. Medium-bodied with notes of burnt caramel, fudge, grass and cookies. Long firm balanced finish of burnt caramel, nuts, minerals and spicy hops.

Bottled@Monks Café Sveavägen, Stockholm. Amber colour, not much head. Aroma is caramel, some mild toffee, grass and herbal notes. Flavour is wood, sweetness and some slight earthyness and fruits. Quite far from any Alt I've had before...

Bought this one on my trip out east. And down the hatch it went! Almost down the drain too, it was pretty poopy. Pours a light muddy buddy colour, no head. Got a sweet aroma, some toast, milky, light almond scent. Taste is slightly metallicy and plain. Noticeable watery finish as well. Sorry, two thumbs down.

At first excited, then the excited faded when i started pouring .. . light chocolate and very light maple . . god, has no balls . . confusing mouthfeel . . light headring . light molasses in the nose . . decent i guess but is it being prepared to do the right thing, whatever the cost? Isn't that what makes a man?
