Visitors to Smuttynose Island, peering across the dark waters of Gosport Harbor towards the ragged rocks of neighboring Star Island, are sometimes startled by the fleeting sight of mysterious, alluring creatures swept up from the Atlantic’s cold, inky depths. Or so they tell us. Our Star Island Single is an eminently sessionable, abbey-style ale offering a beguiling mix of flavor and refreshment. This medium-bodied golden ale features a slight residual sweetness from Honey Malt and hints of citrus and tropical fruits from the unique Belgian yeast it is fermented with, leaving a crisp dry finish. Malty aroma has a yeasty overtone and subtle fruity notes. It pours a clear straw yellow - not inspiring (to me, anyway), but at least the white head is quite thick and fluffy. Flavor has a fruity core, apple and banana mostly, with malty and yeasty notes and a hint of butterscotch. Texture has firm body, if not a lot of fizz, but it does leave a fairly persistent tingle.

Bottled. Yellowish golden colour, small white head. Aroma is fruits, mild yeast, some bready malts and also some quite earthy notes. Flavour is fruity, quite bready malty, also some mild rubbery notes as well as some grassyness. Mild spicyness towards the finish as well.

June 2009 - Too much hate on this beer! Pour was yellow, clear and hazy on the edges and a swirl of something that looked like smoke in the center. Nice large pocked head. The aroma was vegetal and a bit funky. The flavor was sweet malt with some vegetal notes and a low level of bitterness. I sorta enjoyed it despite it not quite being awe inspiring.

Earthy yeast aroma with mild hints of banana, ginger and popcorn. Golden orange pour, thin head and minor lacing. Crisp and light, very sessionable. Marmalade and honey mixed with spicy yeast, biscuits and a very calm fruitiness.

This is an ok, average Belgian. Not too much really impressed me with this, but at the same time I found it drinkable with nothing negative to say. Maybe something like a Leffe. Yeasty aroma with flavors of yeast, wheat, banana, and some spices which are typical with this style. Probably more like an "Americanized" version rather than a true Belgian Ale. Glad I just grabbed a single, because not sure I'd be happy with a 6. A decent seasonal/session or daytime beer.

A semi translucent amber colored ale. I have a small frothy white head that settles far too quickly. Left is an absence of any lacing. Biscuit-malt and subtle citrus creep through to the nose. Light, carbonated. Some smoothness. There is a spicy tang in a sweeten malt that finishes with a nice dryness

Bottle. Pours a golden color with a touch of amber, two finger white head, with some decent retention. Aroma is floral and fruity, some spice, and malt. This doesn’t at all taste like a Belgian, but I’m fine with that because it drinks exactly as advertised, a good session beer. Apricot and peachy fruits, some complimenting spice, as well as grainy notes. Not too sweet, nothing at all bad about this beer, very solid. Some subpar scores are surprising. Thumbs up to Smutty for this refreshing session!

Pours out in a hazy golden colour with a minimal white head. Mild and rounded aroma of herbal hops, cookies and dried apricots with traces of yeast. Medium-bodied with notes of spicy yeast, soap, orange-zest and herbal hops. Mild herbal and yeasty finish with touches of dried oranges.
