12oz bottle pours dark brown with amber hues and thin light tan head. The aroma offers up prunes and dates as well as some malts, some crystal malts and maybe nuttiness too. The taste has some roasted malts, spicy maple and spicy to earthy hop notes to start. It gets slightly roasty with malts into the finish. It ends with lingering anise like spiciness, spicy hops and earthy hops. Pretty hop forward brown.

nice head, tootsie roll-like chocolate, slightly more hoppy in the aroma, but more nutty & sweet in the mouth. Not a bad little brown...better than expected from Shipyard.

I prefer my brown ales to be of the nutty British variety, not a browner version of the American amber ale. I find this to be closer to the latter. Too much sweetness in the aroma and the flavour for me to take the 'brown' tag seriously.

A nice deep brown colored beer with reddish notes when held to a light. A big cramy textured, light beige colored head rises above. There's some hang time. Settles into a thick soapy ringlet. A mild toffee-buttery nose. Smooth full bodied. Nutty and grassy hops with toffee follow through in the tasting. Overall, not bad.

I bought this in the captain's collection variety pack. I'd say it was my 2nd favorite in there so far.....with the Blue Fin Stout being the best. This was pretty good for a brown ale. I had a variety pack from them years ago, but forgot the details so waited til now to review. I'd say this is one of their better ones. Has a darker brown appearance but not super-dark. Smell is a little yeasty, sort of like those Dutch Brown or European ales. On the lighter ABV% side, so has some good malty flavors (caramel, chocolate, etc.)....but a decent bitter hoppy finish to it. Can also taste that yeast as well which adds some flavor. I bought a single brown ale from Smutty to compare it to, and curious to try Sammy's Brown Ale as well. But this is something that I would buy again because the price is right.

Poured a nice caramel color with ample, foamy head. This beer had a nice slightly sweet maltiness in both smell and taste. It does, however, strike me as just average for a brown ale. Pleasant, but nothing that really stands out.

Bottle: Poured a clear brown color ale with a nice foamy head with better then average retention. Aroma of grain with some roasted flavour. Taste is really malt but with more dry notes then sweetness. Some light bitter notes at the end with a weird yeasty finish. Body is a slightly watery with some adequate carbonation. Overall, I thought this was a refreshing brown ale but something seems off with the yeast.

Medium to dark amber in color with a very quickly diminishing head and no lacing. What it lacks in appearance it makes up for in aroma and flavor. Lots of sweet malt with that trademark buttery goodness. Mouthfeel is alright I like my browns a bit thicker and creamier. Flavor is good, nice and sweet with a hint of bittering hops. Light caramel and buttery goodness round out this one. If it wasn't for the flavor I wouldn't consider this a brown ale, it's decent but that's about it.

This dark amber brown brew is full of sweet maltiness to the nose with a hint of hops. the flavor is malty with bitter hoppy undertones and a touch of taffy sweetness.
