A deliciously dark lager, Baltic Porter is clean, robust and full of dark chocolate notes with subtle hints of caramel and roast. Baltic porters share a similar origin story as the modern day American India Pale Ale; both styles originated in England and have evolved over time to represent the local flavors and tastes of their respective region. In the case of Baltic porter, brewers in countries like Estonia, Lithuania and Finland combined traditional English porter characteristics with the German lager influences to create a bottom-fermented black beer with less roasted malt notes than English stouts and porters, according to All About Beer Magazine. While the BJCP lists most versions around 7-8.5% ABV, we went down our own path -- staying true to The Shed's spirit of rugged innovation -- which comes in at a silky smooth 6.5% ABV. Created by cellar supervisor, Robbie Leeds, Baltic Porter features a clean, dark chocolate flavor profile with subdued notes of roast and a hit of caramel. Pilsner, carapils and oats create a sweet, smooth and chewy mouthfeel. This one is hitting shops first in our Mountain Mixer Variety Pack and, as the mercury dips, in sixers of 12 ounce bottles wherever The Shed is stocked.

Bottle in Vermont for Easter weekend (thanks Nikki). Dark brown colour, almost black with a mocha-coloured head, with a little layer on top that stays and mild lacing. Aromas of coffee and nuts over the roasted malts. The taste has the roasted malts again with a little more hops in the finish all nicely balanced. Some coffee lingers on the tongue. Hints of chocolate and dark fruits, but none compared to most Baltic Porter. Easy, but nothing special.
