Tradition reborn - Eisbock Kraftbier, a beer with patina, over 100 years old, once prescribed as a medicine for weak recovering patients - is currently celebrating its renaissance as URBOCK DUNKEL EISBOCK. Brewed with special dark malt and fermented with traditional Eggenberg yeast, this beer has a maturation period of up to nine months. Dark brown in color with an alcohol content of almost 10% by volume, URBOCK DUNKEL EISBOCK has a pleasant, full, and creamy body, with the aroma of coffe, surprisingly light on the tongue despite the alcohol content. Warming with toffee-like malty sweetness, balanced by a hoppy-bitterness in the finish, it is a power beer, as its traditional Austrian name says, best enjoyed after dinner or as an evening drink.

Eisbocks, like Ice Wines, are an acquired taste. I think I'm one of the ones who has acquired it. This beer pours a dark brown with reddish hints, and a medium sized tan coloured head. The aroma is very sweet with hints of toffee and brown sugar side by side with roasted malt. The flavour is very sweet (a trend with Castle Eggenberg beers) but is balanced out by some hoppish bitterness at the end.

Based on the initial aromas of ripe fruit and toffee I thought that this was going to be a great drinking beer. When I poured it into a glass the head of this thin to medium bodied reddish brown lager dissipated quickly and I began to sense something was not right. All I could taste on the palate was the alcohol which was a bit overwhelming. Not a beer I would recommend.

Tap, arrived with a reddish brown palour about its countenance, Aroma was distinctive and somewhat grape-y, not quite wine-ish, but a little grape juicy-ish, not grape juicy-ish like staining your teeth from drinking too much grape juice, just a little like eating grapes through a straw. Flavor was not even close to that. slightly sweet, with heavy malts and. Overall a good beer.

Eisbock pours the color and clarity of a deep red-brown garnet. There's no foam or lace, and I can see the bottom of my glass through the liquid. Intense aromas waft upwards. There's sweet malt, chocolate, tobacco, and prune born on the alcohol vapors. Flavors are caramel, raisin, and sherry. Feels smooth, creamy, and viscous on the palette. Aftertaste is sweet, strong, and pleasant. The alcohol is well-masked, encouraging another sip. Better than port with an after dinner cigar.

Pours a medium golden dark brown with a thin head that dissipates quickly. Low carbonation, with sweet/alcohol flavor. Not bad, would probably make an excellent after dinner drink.

10.26.04 330ml bottle. Pours birch-beer crimson brown with modest tan head that fades to trace. Aromas deep and vinous, sherry, coffee ice cream aromas, nutmeg, rum-soaked raisins. Potent alcohol is perfectly masked within the aromas, but integrated wonderfully. Do you have any tobacco? This beer has. Chewy plug tobacco presents itself on the palate along with a nice nutty malt balance. As sweet as it is, the sugary aspect is countered by a rich smokey character. Big liquor (cognac, sherry) flavors but never overbearing. The balance of this brew is outstanding. Wow!

This is a low carbonation beer. The head is weak and shortlived, but the dark mahogany body has a nice glow when it catches the light. Brown sugar and prunes make up the bulk of the aroma with some dates and nutmeg backing that up. The flavor is pretty sweet. Something like a gingersnap cookie even down to the little sugar granules on top. This was actually a little better than I was expecting.

Not a whole lotta great things to say about this beer. Had a bit of a doppelbock flavor to it but it was just way to syrupy. Alcohol was noticable. Thin white head, dark velvet color. Not the worst but I certainly won't be buying it again nor recommending this one to anybody.

Dark brown body with a little amber coloring. The head is a light yellowish white color. The aroma is rich and buttery with some caramel. There are also hints of coffee. The taste is mossy mushrooms and caramel. There is a finish of toffee and a little chocolate. This is a thick and chewy beer. A little hot in the aftertaste. Definitely a sipper. I think this would mellow out nicely with a few years on it.

A very nice beer, this one poured a nice translucent dark brown with a small head that gave no lacing. The aroma was of alcohol and grapes, rather vinous. Flavor was consistent with smell although the malty base came through in a creamy fashion. Good stuff, but strong stuff, as the ABV wasn't "hidden."
