Samichlaus is brewed once a year on December 6, and is aged for 10 months before bottling. It is one of the rarest specialties in the world. Samichlaus may be aged in the bottle for many years to come, as older vintages become more complex. Brilliant deep amber, complex dry toasted malt nose and huge intensely sweet palate. The 2007 bottling is the first bottling since 1986.

Bottle from 2005. Consumed July 6th, 2006. Poured crystal clear with that perfect copper hue. However the head was disappointing. Aroma is classic Barleywine. It’s kinda sweet and malty. The taste is thick and viscous. A sweet malty flavor, fruity and sweet sugar along with some nice hop bitterness biting along the edge of my tongue. I also taste a bit of yeast that gives it just a slight hint of Belgium beer flavor. Really good beer for the ABV. First couple of ounces the alcohol is fairly well hidden. Leaves a sweet malty and fruity aftertaste. Might be a bit on the sweet side. All and all, nice beer.

Comes out of the tap a clear reddish amber with a decidedly ruby tone and a fine-bubbled pale tan head. Rich, spicy, malty aroma has tones of cloves, cinnamon and apple. Strong, mouth-filling flavor has malty, peppermint, apple and cloves notes plus hints of caramel and horehound, and is rather sweet but not cloying. Syrupy texture is quite fizzy.

Pours without a head in a dark ice tea color. Aroma is of sugar, maple syrup and fruit like maybe of apple and plum. For a high ABV 14 it is extremely smooth and reminds me of barley wine.

It pours a bright burnt-orange and amber with a very thin pearl-white head and a ring of surrounding lacing. A bready aroma of caramel malts, oranges and citrus fruits, papaya and mango, brown sugar, apple pie, butterscotch, peach and apricot, and mild spiciness. The mouthfeel is smooth and rich. Flavors of caramel malts, orange and citrus, hops, alcohol, papaya and mango, peach and apricot, raisins and figs, apples, and spiciness. Wow .. wonderful!!

2007 bottle...it's been so long since I had the black label, i have a hard time telling the difference. this too is overly sweet and a bit of a one trick pony, but maybe because the age is not quite as thick and harsh as the black was. still a little too sweet and thick, but it's a decent after dinner sipper.

A bright amber colored beer. A small, frothy textured, white head rises all too briefly above. It settles quickly leaving no lacing. The nose and to a stronger extent, the tasting are vinuous, fruity and sweet. That sweetness is for my palate a bit oo overpowering. A medium bodied beer.

This is hard to enjoy cause it's so damn strong!! Actually first sampled it late night, so by the time I got half way through I was falling asleep so capped it and finishing the rest now. Very sweet flavors, almost like a strong apple cider. Aroma and tastes of wheat and barley, perhaps some fruit in there somewhere. Clear light to medium brown appearance. Hard to hide the alcohol on this one. Definitely meant for sipping.

Bottle dated 2007, purchased 8/2009. Blech! Guess I should have heeded the warning about the maltyness. Poured dark dark brownish red with a little bit of off white head that lasted maybe a minute. Aroma was malty sweet. Taste was all alcohol and bitterness. Not my cup of tea. I could have skipped this and been fine.

Sampled from a bottle at Redlight. Pours an orange color, some haze, with a nice initial white head. This is very sweet and somewhat syrupy with a lot of caramel and toffee flavors, a touch of dried fruit, with a little alcohol sting in the finish. However, for a 14% brew it drinks lighter than expected. Drinks like a barleywine in many ways. A real sipper but I liked it.

Pousr out in a clear dark golden colour with a small dissapearing white foam. Corn, cardboard, alcohol syrup and almonds in the aroma. Full-bodied, warming and sweet with notes of biscuit, alcohol, syrup, cookies and candied almonds. Sugary sweet and warming finish from peppery alcohol, Decent malt liqour without adjunkts flavours.
