This big, malty ale is dark, sweet and roasty with enough strength to make it a winter warmer.

Deep, rich reby/caramel color with a thick off-white head and superb retention. Laces circularly til the end. Aroma is slightly sweet and malty with a slight hint of caramel. Medium bodied. Flavors match aroma with the addition of very mild hoppiness on the finish.

12 oz bottle, received via jdskinns -
It's always interesting to receive beers via trade with others. Getting beers that you heard about, but never see the light of day due to distribution (or lack thereof) is a good thing. Schlafly falls into this "interesting" category because I've heard mostly good things about them and the few times I've had their beer it's been good.
So I crack the beer open and it pours out a dark root-beer/chocolate brown, cloudy with a 1-finger beige head. Head melts relatively quickly, but swirling does bring it to life again. Aroma is mostly sweet, but seems lacking any real definition. Nothing bad, but I definitely don't get the classic scotch-style aroma here. Just some sweet malts. Could have been an amber, brown or another pedestrian style. Flavor was also medium sweet, but it did have some tea-like flavor with the tannins to go with it, making me think that crystal malts were used in abundance. I miss the earthy/peaty notes that I associate with this style. Mouthfeel was creamy and smooth. Overall, it was a nice beer but hard to really fall in love with it. -

Dark brown pour with a nice fluffy tan head. The smell is the best part of this beer. Roasty grain and chocolate sweetness to the nose. Mouthfeel is creamy but a little thin. Tastes of toffee and caramel are present but doesn't overpower the roasted smokey grains. A slight bitter finish and sweet aftertaste is a nice ending. Not what I would call a session beer, but tossing down 2 or 3 would be perfect. Schlafly's best beer! I wished they made it all year round.

This scotch ale pours a amber brown color from a 12oz bottle. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is scotch, smoke, wood and sweet. A medium bodied scotch ale. Malts are brown sugar and molasses, peat and smoke. Hops are slightly citrusy. Nice balance. Smooth taste. Neat peat and smoke flavors. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

i love scotch (ales) scotchy scotch scotch... nice deep dark brown color with light tan head that disappears quickly. The aroma was butterscotch, alcohol, toffee and hint of chocolate. the flavors were lots of toffee and butterscotch, some carmel, and some Reisin candies. The mouthfeel is thin but Big flavor.

A dark brown appearance with a moderate head. A bread filled aroma with some walnuts, chocolates, and grapes. The flavor is rather tame but not bad. Some chocolate, roasted almonds, and toffee present. The palate is somewhat thin. Pretty good beer.

Pours with thick, off white head. Nice dark red color and pleasant sweet caramel aroma. Nice malt flavor with a very slight hop undertone. Clean finish. Would definitely drink this one again.

The aroma is very aromatic and malty-like with hints of some spice with maybe some smoke or caramel. The appearance is very nice and a very dark, rich amber color with a very nice head on top that is off-white and sticks to the glass nicely. The mouthfeel is dark and full-bodied and full of malt with good balance and complexity. The flavor is very robust and definitely smokey-like with some sweetness and faint caramel with a good finish that is smooth and rather refreshing; it is very unique and very good. Overall, an excellent scotch ale and very malty but not overwhelming with some caramel and some smoke as well; this was a very good scotch ale, one of the better I have had. Thanks a lot Brett!

Sampled from bottle. Pours a clear, dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is a very mild malt with faint notes of caramel and smoke. Flavor is very well-balanced with rich caramel malts and spicy, floral and earthy hops. Medium-bodied, moderately carbonated and smooth. Incredibly drinkable.
