Unusual and playful, this half-breed brew begins with a rush of smoky, almost savory, aromas and flavors. The distinctive campfire smokiness of a rauchbier lingers and begins to reveal the rich and velvety malt smothness of a double bock with notes of toffee and caramel. This roguish brew transforms from its bol start to a hearty and satisfying finish.

Pours a clear, dark mahogany with a thick, fluffy and rather persistent pale tan head. Malty aroma has a strong yeasty overtone and a hint of - is that beef jerky? Flavor has a malty core with tones of smoke, barbecue and caramel and a hint of yeast. It’s almost like drinking a well-smoked sausage. (Ugh - I’m a vegetarian, but this is beer!) Smooth texture has above average body and some decent fizz. Like barbecue? Try this one!

Not a very good rauchbier and certainly not up to the standards of what I've come to expect from Sam Adams and Boston Beer Co. Only light smokiness in the aroma and misses the mark on flavor. It looks the part to some degree, but appears thin - same for mouthfeel. Unimpressive.

Bomber/cool 22 oz bottle from Stoutlover: deep tea brown pour, tall off-white head, good lacing. Sweet malty and caramel aroma, very very little smoke, maple syrup almost, light earthy hops. Flavor is a bit of a letdown because I find very little smoke - plenty malty and toffee sweet though, big and warming. Still, too mild to be considered a legit Rauchbier for me.

A very pleasant brew with ample bock qualities and a good mild smoked malt content. Great ruby brown body with a thick frothy tan head and thick lacing. Earthy smoked peat with a touch of toffee followed by raisins and molasses. A touch meaty with an approachable campfire quality. Lightly sweetened, medium bodied and very smooth. Nothing earth shattering, but well put together. A nice medley of styles that is extremely approachable.

I had some mixed feelings about this beer. On one hand, I applaud Sam Adams for doing different styles of beer and pricing them on the affordable side. But sometimes making a beer style because you can, should be reeled in a bit because the end product isn't quite spectacular, or above average even. I guess all things considered, it is above averag, but barely.
The aroma has some smokey character to it, light soy, some Coca-cola wit just a little floral note. Flavor carries the smokey character pretty easily, but it's rather watered down. I can't help comparing this smoked bock, with another smoked bock...one Aecht Schlenkerla's Ur-bock and it's not even in the same stratosphere. Not much else going on with this beer. It's like all the character and complexity has been stripped down to some light smoke. While it's not a bad beer, it could have been a smoked amber, or a smoked brown or some other vague style. Worth it once I thought, but not much else. -

Not alot of smoke in this one, in the aroma or flavor. Other aromas include sweet caramel malts. Flavor is a bit off with the smoke , and caramel mixed with plenty of alcohol give it a strange taste. Overall i like bocks, smoked beers and 'double' beers, but this one just didnt do it for me.

Other than being a little thin and watered down this was actually a pretty good smoked beer and a pretty good bock. Not a sour smoke like some can be, it seemed more pleasant, salty oysters, meaty and soy sauce. The sweet bockiness at the back end made it just right and balanced out the beer. Also a nice looking beer, they really do appearance well with this series.

A deep amber colored beer with a boig frothy textured white head rising above. There's some hang tome. Settles into a thin ringlet and light splotches of film. This is not my favorite style. But try I will. Barbecue sauce profile. Smokey. Light-medium bodied and syrupy.

nice mix of smoke and heat, in a full bodied, almost sticky bodied beer. smoke and maple-ey sweetness, more so than a traditional doppelbock for sure, but it works. aroma and taste similar, but there's an extra kick o sweet right at the back of the mouth, then a nice smokey finish. I liked this, as i have all the Sam Adams 22's so far, but it doesn't stand out amongst those. If it remains in the area, I'd probably get again for a summer bbq.

wow, was looking forward to this- but quite the let down .. . pours a deep copper amber .. low foam, almost no lacing .. . messy sticky mouthfeel, and damned alcoholic .. . light maple smoke and boozy bacon drippings .. . no, this is so out of whack.. . i'm surprised about this one; the mouth + abv kills this one, just very messy and one dimensional- oh well .. . . Who asked for fruits drunk at a bar? l asked for new recruits drunk at the bar...
