This traditional lager is medium in body with a deep roasted character. Its dark color and rich malty flavor come from specially roasted caramel and chocolate malts. This brew is lightly hopped with Noble Bavarian hops for a soft spiciness and a smooth clean finish.

This is a great cheap beer. The color is extremely dark and has a great aroma. However this great apperence does not have a distinct taste and is not flavorful. Howvever for $33 a case its worth it.

I bought this as part of a twelve pack (a twack) sampler package of Samuel Adams beers. I loved the color and aroma and was surprised by its malt taste.

A nice black pour that looked great in the Sam Adams Boston Lager glass. Great roasted aroma with generous hints of coffee and chocolate. Flavor was sweet chocolate and bitter coffee. Well balanced and refreshing.

pours a dark, cola-like brown while yielding a small of off-white head with modest retention and lacing. The aroma is strongly lead by roasted malts, followed by lesser notes of chocolate and hops. The roasted malts is also at the forefront of the flavor with a bit of bitter chocolate and hops are evident behind the malt; approaching a stout but not quite. The mouthfeel is OK but there is significant room for improvement; light bodied and a bit watery.

Pours a nice dark black with a nice 1/4 inch tan head when poured slowly in to a chilled pint glass. The taste is of a stout but it has a much lighter feel to it and the lager had a nice sweet taste to it but not too sweet. Another good beer from Samuel Adams!

Pours a dark black with a decent head. Aroma is typical, nothing special. taste is slightly metallic with strong hints of coffee and dark roast malts. Slightly watered down. Not bad, will have again.

355 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.9%. Not entirely black colour, rather very dark brown. Thick beige head. Moderate but nice aroma of dark bread, roasted malts and herbal German hops. The flavour is moderately roasty with just a modest sweetness, could be called medium dry. A slight acidity in the finish, more bittering hops would be desirable. Decent enough to drink, but not very exciting.

Overall: Good take on the style, could have been better!

One of my favorites from Sam Adams and one of the first really "dark" beers I ever enjoyed. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel with caramel, bread and roasted notes (maybe a bit of chocolate too) in the taste. Highly drinkable.

Very dark brown to very, very dark ruby red. Some slight orange highlights around the edges. Fairly clear with a tan colored head that didn't produce much or have much retention. The smell revealed a dark, roasted, chocolate malt. Picked up hints of buttermilk (not my favorite fragrance). It has caramel listed on the label, but I'm not really picking it up. I'm even picking up cream hints. Doesn't seem as well balanced as I thought it should be. Has a deep, roasted, earthy, burnt malt to the taste. Some chocolate in there. Again no caramel. The taste was more balanced than the smell and was just Ok in my opinion. Medium mouthfeel. Mostly dry, creamy and smooth. Coats the palate honorably. This is not one of my favorite Sam Adams brews nor is it one of my favorite styles. This is a beer I can finish, but would probably not go for round two. Every time I took a drink I continually got the "buttermilk" scent. I didn't care for that. Others may enjoy this beer, however I don't think I want to try this again.

Purchased in Nashville on my trip to Tennessee in a 6-pack sampler. Cola-looking with a big frothy beige head and lots of lacing. Smells yeasty and malty like their Coastal Wheat brew with notes of chocolate malt, nuts and mild dark fruits. Smooth and silky mouthfeel. The taste has some dark and caramel malts with a touch of nuts and a light bitter finish. A nice easy-drinking Schwarzbier.
