Dark black with a tan head. Aroma contains some chocolate, licorice, and nutty elements. Flavor is somewhat dry with some dark chocolate and coffee. Good mouthfeel on this one. Overall viva rogue.

Draft @ the Gingerman, Houston .. . black, medium foam, great lacing .. . wow! roasty, tar and coffee grounds .. quite thick for schwarz, this is fantastic stuff .. the best schwarzbier i've had! .. . Duct tape was invented a long time before you were born by somebody really smart. The end

I dig Scwarzbiers, I really do, but this one didn't do anything for me and I had it nice and fresh at the brewery. A nice black pour that makes a Scwarzbier proud, but the aroma was weak on the roasted end, more sweet malt than roasted. Same with the flavour, the roasted bitterness associated with most Schwarzbiers was completely missing.

One pour, the reason the for the name becomes clear. Black, like a chocolate stout. A small, brown, fizzy head rises briefly above. Left behind is a thin, brown soapy ringlet. In the nose and in the tasting are roasted malt, slightly bittering coffee and semi sweet chocolate. Medium bodied and well carbonated. Like so many very good stouts and porters, and for that reason I liked this one.

Pours more like a porter or stout than a schwarzbier - ruby black and not thin but opaque, with a medium tan head and light lacing. Nice roasted malts aroma with some slight molasses and light hops. Taste is rich with a very nice roasted malt quality, slightly sweet behind that then a roasty hint of bitter linger. This is a big black beer that satisfies immensely.

Tried this one several weeks ago, and forgot to review it, so this is based off of my memory... Black body with a tan cap, decent lace. Aromas of roasted malt, some coffee with chocolate. Flavor was about the same as the aroma except some slightly floral hops gave it some more complexity. Nice brew.

a good looking dark, thick black lager. you wouldn't know it's only 5% from the flavor. full flavored roasty goodness. not good enough to eclipse the style but choclate, roasted malt, and a hint of bitter hops make this a tasty edition to the Rogue family.

Pours black with huge, dense head and terrific lacing. The aroma is roasty with coffee notes but also notable herbal hops to balance a bit. The flavor is rich and refreshing, crisp with a nice, dry finish. Medium bodied, smooth, almost creamy and well carbonated. Neat idea by Rogue and the beer is a success.

Sampled on 2/5/2010. This schwartzbeir pours an eclipse black color from a 22oz bottle. Medium to large sized tan foamy head, with nice retention and good lacing. The aroma is roasty and chocolate with a touch of floral hops. A medium to full bodied schwartzbeir. The malts are roasty, chocolate and coffee. The hops are floral and earthy. Very creamy and full bodied for a schwarzbier. Good carbonation. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Pour is black with a chocolate shake colored head. Aroma of dark, smoky malts, chocolate and coffee. Taste is dominated by the smoky, roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate with a hint of bitter hops to keep the sweetness from taking over. Normally, I don't like coffee aromas and flavors in my beer but for this, an exception is warranted. An unexpected winner in my book.
