Pickled Santa is fuller, softer and rounder than you would expect a 6% ale to be. That's not altogether surprising because in Victorian England before the days of analytical chemistry we unscrupulous brewers used to regularly add Coriander to beer for it's power to make the beer seem stronger and "bigger" than it would otherwise be. But you don't really taste or smell the Coriander.

Pours golden with a creamy head. ALL spice on the nose! There was a hint of lemon aroma right before I started drinking it. The actual taste wasn't as full of spice as I was expecting it to be. It was quite different than what I was expecting.

This is also known as the Hop Back Pickled Santa (which I've also had), a nice English Strong Ale. The beer pours a nice copper colour with a huge head. The aroma is sweet caramel malt and seasonal spices. The flavour was malty withy hints of coriander.

A semi translucent orange amber colored ale. A big foamy white head sits atop staying there for a fair amount of time, settling into a soapy light ringlet. The aroma is subtle, not what you’d expect from this genre. I get some fruit. The body is medium and smooth. Malt is upfront in the taste. If there are spices in here there’re weak. It’s drinkable just not above average spiced ale.

light spices and the traditional thin english ale body. not offensive at all...even tasty as it warmed, but pretty basic and uninspired. pale chestnut color, smooth but too thin. little hops.

Has a rich, malty, yeasty aroma with an undertone of spice and sweet hints. Pours a clear coppery-amber with a white head that does not stick around. Flavor is yeasty and malty with a hint of spice and just a touch of hops. Texture is tingly and lively so it dances on the tongue and on the way down.

One of 4 half-pint bottles in the Shelton Brothers Holiday Ales pack, from World Market in San Jose @ 19.95. Label has picture of Santa stuffed in a pickle jar, 6% alc. Pours a clear copper color, nice white head of large bubbles, settles quickly, stringy lace. Mild aroma of 'seasonal spices', some corriander, and some malt sweetness. Slightly toasted malt, some hops, not alot of other spices that I could find. The spices, malt and hops are all balanced, but not really complex. Slightly disappointing, I think I was expecting more.
