For years fans of the Renaissance beers had been asking, “when are you guys going to do a Stout?” It was eventually decided that the effort Brian was putting into taking these pesky blighters out the back to give them a shoeing could be better used to actually make the aforementioned stout. So we produced not only a Stout, but a Chocolate Oatmeal Stout, the Craftsman. Craftsman is the ‘Big Brother’ to our popular Elemental porter. Building on the flavours given by the crystal, brown and black malts, we add a portion of organic rolled oats for a silky smooth mouthfeel, then added a small amount of cocoa nibs to the mash and brew kettle, plus a large addition of nibs to the fermentor. The beer that matured on those cocoa nibs has a lovely chocolate nose that melds beautifully with the coffee and hop notes in the beer. The resulting Stout has a full rounded palate with chocolate and roasted notes predominating and the depth of intensity that one expects from a Stout. Craftsman is a great accompaniment with: Fruit Desserts Rich cakes Biscuits and cookies and by recommendation Venison So, to all those that asked the question “when are you guys going to do a Stout?” we hope you will enjoy it when you regain consciousness.

A new discovery from yet another venture across the PA state line to Vintage Estates. This is the first ever brew I have tried from New Zealand (ZL as we ham operators say). The head is phat and sudsy with the tan bubbles melting rapidly leaving an inch lacing. The dark brown to black hue is very inviting. This stout has a very strong burnt malt quality to it. Very rich with slight chocolate notes on the buds. It was not as sweet and smooth, and is a bit more hoppy than say a Sam Smith's Oatmeal, but it was still very top notch as far as drinkability. I didn't really detect the oatmeal, thus leading to the lack of Sam Smith smoothness that I was looking for. The finish was a tad piney for me, but other than that, I would make the trip up the Turnpike to Boardman, OH again, to get another.

A very dark brown beer with black edges, and a huge frothy brown head that stocks around until the end. Coffee, chocolate, and molasses can be noticed in the aroma with a little nuttiness. Flavour is on the sweet side for the style with the molasses and chocolate being the dominant forces on the tongue. Would have been better had it been a bit heavier

Poured a huge brownish foamy and creamy head. Has an extremely dark blackish appearance. Thick lacing. Aromas of dark cocoa, coffee, and even a faint soya type smell, not offensive. Intensely flavourful. Has the usual suspects as in chocolate, mocha, coffee but as well as notes of oatmeal, barley and a hint of vanilla. Mouthfeel a bit watery at first, but when settled in, has a nice thick creamy mouthfeel. Very good.

Excellent appearance. Pours solid black with a huge mocha coloured head. Great retention but not much lacing. Not much of an aroma which was disappointing. Dark chocolate, cocoa, a little vanilla and slightly bitter flavour. Quite thin with moderate carbonation. Worth a second try.

500ml bottle – pours a pitch black ale in the glass with a smallish tan cap. Modest carbonation. Aroma is really understated for this style – you get some roast ant burnt cocoa a bit of maltiness and not much more. Flavor starts off as a contemporary Choco-stout but mid palate and through the finish there is an astringence and sourness that should not be there on this style (no I didn’t get a bad bottle because the other 3 were the same). All in all this is not a bad brew per se but the sourness is a hold back in enjoying the drink. Won’t be back to buy another of this one as long as Young’s is on th shelves.

The beer a solid black colour with brown edges, and no head, despite a vigourous pour. The aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee. Mouthfeel is medium-full with medium carbonation. Flavour is definite roast with hints of chocolate and caramel. Easy drinking, but not outstanding. -

Lilihel found this for me at the LCBO. Pours a very dark brown colour showing very little red highlights. Its head is deep beige, creamy and gives out good lacing. Nice blended cocoa aromas with roasted malt and vanilla to tones down things. Wet mouthfeel that felt thin at first, but starts getting some medium-body after the last pour. Mostly roasted malts for flavours with maybe a little hints of chocolate in the finish. Goes down easy for a stout, but was expecting more from this one.

Sample I got fizzed quite a bit, if not volcanically, so have a towel handy. It pours a warm sable with a very thick, fluffy, rather persistent tan head. Rick, smoky aroma has notes of quality coffee, semi-sweet chocolate, caramel and brown sugar with some nutty and earthy hints.. Slightly powdery texture has average body but plenty of fizz, and leaves a chocolaty, earthy finish. Overall, a well-crafted beer.
