Vanilla Gorilla, Brick Mason Series #8, has developed a cult following over the years. The original recipe was simply our Red Brick Porter with Madagascar Vanilla beans added. Over the years we've brewed different variations including the use of cherry wood smoked malt, aging in Jack Daniels barrels, peated malt and even smoking the vanilla beans at Fox Bros., a local BBQ joint. One thing you can always count on with our Vanilla Gorilla is a delicious vanilla porter with a creative twist.

Pours a deep, warm, opaque sable with a fairly thick and fine-bubbled tan head. Smoky aroma has a firm overtone of semi-sweet chocolate and more than a hint of vanilla, plus hints of caramel and quality coffee. Flavor - oo la la, like drinking a Hershey bar with Irish coffee! Strongly chocolaty, plus coffee, roast malt, caramel, vanilla, hints of licorice and woody hops. Absolutely lip-smacking. Firm texture has plenty of fizz and life. Where does a vanilla gorilla drink beer? Anywhere he (or she) wants to! :D

Dark brown pour, tight tan head, nice lacing. Inviting roasted malts meet vanilla and molasses. Thinnish. Pretty good, not stellar. Nice sweet linger.

I'd say this reminds me of Breckenridge's Vanilla Porter....good but not great. Not a huge fan of Red Brick, so the two brewers seem to be in about the same category. Has the feel of a flatter porter. The feel may be the best part, along with the dark appearance. Vanilla makes it a tad too sweet though. Flavor still good and could go either way at 7 or 8, which would push the overall up a point too. I wanted to like this more, just can't rate it at 4 or above.
