Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

Comes out of the tap a deep, warm sable with a fairly thick tan head. Roast malt aroma has strong smoky, earthy and nutty notes plus a chocolaty hint. Flavor continues the roast malt theme plus nutty, earthy and subtle chocolate components. Firm texture has a strong and persistent fizz. This dog’s gonna hunt all right.

Sampled at GABF on 9/16/2010. This Schwarzbier pours a dark brown color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is roasted malts and a touch of coffee. A medium to light bodied Schwarzbier. The malts are chocolate, caramel and roasty. The hops are herbal. A lighter bodied beer, but lots of flavor. Mouthfeel is a touch thin. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Not much in the aroma department, appearance was a deep brown/ black, with plenty of carbonation, decent head that left some lace. Mouthfeel was average with a carbonation bite. Flavors of toasted malts, and chocolate these were a bit on the light side though. Overall it is the best Rahr beer i have sampled yet, and its a decent interpretation of the style.

Thanks to Brett for this Texan Schwarzbier. Poured a deep chocolate color with faint mahogany highlights and a foamy tan head that fades a little too fast. Posseses a wonderfully complex and alive nose - toasted malts, mild chocolate, faint smoke and light fresh hops. Taste is exceptional as well, medium bodied, fresh and alive on the palate. Flavors fulfilled by the nose's promise: moderately-roasted malts, a faint smokiness, hints of chocolate or coffee and a crisp hop-bitter finish. This is a credible, delicious version of one of my favorite beer styles.

this is just a run of the mill black bastard.... looks like tame coca-cola...weak smell of nothing...nothing offensive but you have to have something there in the first place...

Just ok. Beer poured dark, little head or lacing. Flavor was dark and roasty, but just thin and not that flavorful. Not even close to as good as Sam Adams Black Lager...and when you can't even hold a candle to a Sam Adams example of a style (even if it is good in this case), that's never good.

The body is a very dark ruby with a a creamy, pale khaki head. The aroma is really quite beautiful. An elegant coal, fresh coffee and cocoa maltiness. The flavor is drier than the aroma suggested and is actually a bit of a letdown after that gorgeous aroma. Still, a clean, well-brewed lager. I’d like to see a bit more robust flavor, though. I’m not asking for the bold flavors of a porter or stout, but I get none of the subtle malt components in the flavor that I got in the aroma.

First stricking feature is a well pronouced smokey character which is quite predominant both in the nose and taste. Pours a dark dark brown, bordering black. Flavour is well developed but a little short of anything fantastic. A fresh black lager.

Sampled from bottle. This schwarz pours a ruby-tinted black-brown with a creamy tan head and notable amounts of lacing. Aroma is rich for the style with toasted bread, cocoa and faint hop spiciness. Flavor is reminiscent of the aroma and slightly bitter with a sharp, crisp finish. Medium-bodied and light to moderate carbonation. This is a well-made black lager and it'd be a shame to not try a sixer again soon.

Pours mahagony with good clarity and a thick, frothy head. The aroma is deeply musty, rich with earth, nearly perfect by style. The full flavor is rich with malts and bitter-chocolate. The aftertaste drys slowly. Smooth and full bodied, but not overly filling, you can easily drink a couple, and will want to do so.
