Piraat is a 'living' beer, which means that after the primary fermentation in the keg, the beer also continues to evolve during the secondary fermentation in the bottle or in the keg after packaging. This is a world-class amber colored beer. American beer connoisseurs give it 98 out of 100. No other beer scores better. The flavor is so complex and so rich that every swallow conjures up new associations. Note the spicy light sweetness, which is richly balanced with the robust bitterness of the hops. It is an adventure of a beer, a treat. A strong beer like the Piraat has been brewed for a thousand years to be taken out to sea. The Vikings in particular were well acquainted with this type of potent beer. Piraat has a high nutritional value, keeps well for years and strengthens the body and morale of pirates and other seafarers. It is a healthy energy booster.

330 ml bottle, at Roma Pizzeria, Funchal. ABV is 10.5%. Slightly hazy orange colour, large white head. Aroma and flavour of Belgian ale yeast, kandij sugar syrup, mild spices, stewed fruits, hints of dark dried fruits. Nothing wrong with it, but there are even better Belgian strong ales in this style.

Clear copper, small off-white foam head. Strong sweet barley aroma and taste. Low bitterness, bit too sweet. Strong indeed. My rating is below average, how come? (Velp 201604)

Pours out a murky gold color with a massive white foamy head. The aroma is of heavy sweetness. The mouthfeel is full but just a tick hoppy. The flavor is heavy and sweet. It's not bad but the the Priateer is better.

Looks good and drinkable. Aroma has strong fruity overtones, making it smell almost like a cider rather than an ale. Taste is strongly fruity, as well as malty with quite a bite of bitter. A nice jazzy ale that is a pleasure to drink.

Pours a cloudy caramel color with a one finger off white head that lofts a while. Lots of carbonation. Aroma is actually quite calm and distinctively Belgian. Hints of cloves and malts. Taste has hints of yeast, malts, cloves, banana, and slight booze. Drying to the mouth and yet fairly full bodied. Pretty good.

Pours a huge foamy head and has a hazy orange, golden amber appearance. Thick patchy lacing. Earthy and resin hop aromas as well as sweet malts. Flavours of oranges, spices, dark type fruits, herbal hops and some light grassy notes and a little bit yeasty. Has a drying mouthfeel and a slight astringent sensation. Pretty easy going for an above 10%abv brew.

Pours a nice copper color. There is haze present but no visible sediment with a nice head that quickly dissipates to a film. Small amount of visible carbonation only. The aroma is fruity apple, pear, and maybe mango with Belgian yeast character. The taste is fruity malty sweet with some sourness behind that flavor. Dry finish with a less-than-expected bitterness at the end. As the beer warms, a bit more earthy flavor begins to develop. The mouthfeel is not quite overly carbonated but close to it. Overall it's a dry finish, and there is a definite alcohol presence.

A surprise to be sure, after looking at the cheesy "piraat" label I was not expecting to run across an accomplished complex brew. The beverage is fairly creamy is texture, slightly sweet, with fully complex grains that help complete the beverage consumption experience.

Back into Belgium. This good sipping beer. A slight taste of alcohol, not bad not overpowering. Swirl the bottle to get a hazy, light coppery color, big rocky head, good lacing. I like the balance of sweet, bitter, woodsy flavor. A warming glow by the end of the glass. Nice! This will be on the favorites list, with Orval and Hennipin- A few more labor day weekend- delicious! The hint of alcohol would give one the impression of a dessert wine, this is nice sipping beer
