Paulaner Salvator, with its strong, typically malty flavour, is what you could call the "original" Paulaner. The bottom-fermented "Doppelbock" beer combines the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks used to drink Salvator as a food substitute during Lent. The most famous master brewer was Frater Barnabas, who took over the Paulaner monastery brewery in 1773. His original recipe remains practically unchanged to this day. In order to preserve the original, Paulaner registered the name "Salvator" with the patent office in 1896.

This is my first Doppel Bock ever! I was thinking going into it that it would be darker than a porter but I was wrong. It had a caramel aftertaste to it that lingered for a few seconds. It was smooth going down with an assertive taste at the end. This beer was imported by White Plains, NY.

This is the original doppelbock, the one by which all others will supposedly be measured. I can see why. The beer pours a transparent cherry red colour with a generous long lasting off-white foaming cap. Dark fruits, caramel, and roasted malt comprise the bulk of the aromatic nature with some yeast present for good measure. The flavour is sweet roasted malt and caramel, with hints of plums and bread. I can see why this is a Lenten staple.

Poor appearance. Dark orange colour. The thin head disappears in a flash. Not a spot of lacing. Breaded malt, caramel and banana aroma. Flavour is similar to the aroma but sweeter with over ripe fruit, toffee and a hint of alcohol. Medium syrupy mouthfeel. Tastes ok to start but ends up as sweet blah.

Aroma is malty with a fruity undertone and just a hint of spice. It pours a clear cola brown with a respectable light tan head. Flavor is quite strong, malty with undertones of spice and apple. Texture is fairly smooth and tingly, and it has a fair amount of body. Definitely worth seeking.

I had this beer at at German resturant in Milwaukee. This was a GREAT beer. It was a strong bock for sure, but the alcohol, at 7.5 was really hidden. A supremely balanced beer. Nice malt profile - smooth beer.

Oh, how far we come... my first DoppelBock was a very long time ago, and made by Molson. It was horrible. the worst beer I'd ever had for a very long time. Maybe still. And now this. Deep, hazy orange. A ring of foam with a touch of carbonation. Decent aroma: brown sugar, candy, malt. Malt in the taste, and fairly sweet. Smooth, and no hint of alcohol, except in my stomach. Some dark fruit, a little caramel. A quality made brew, even if it's not my favorite.

Clear ruby color with light brown foam head, sadly enough fast completely disappearing. Aroma is malty caramel as a bock should be. Taste also is as expected. A good decent bock, not too sweet, but also not outstanding. (Velp 201210)

Pours a hazy brown hue with a off-white head that quickly dissipates into a wispy lace leaving a semi-trail down the glass. The aroma is malty caramel aroma with a general sweetness in the background. The taste is smooth malty and caramel that is slightly sweet but masked well with the hops. The mouthfeel is heavy body and medium carbonation.

Pours flat and thick. Like liquid velvet. Smells sweet and floral. mouthfeels is suprisingly light. Plums and dried fruit predominate the taste. Finish is sticky and sweet. A little cloying bit very good.

Pours a dark, muddy red-brown with a slight head and decent lacing. Heavily malty with only a slight hint of hops. Smooth beer with a clean finish - easily drinkable, but filling. Still too hot here to fully enjoy what to me is a great fall beer.

500ml bottle, as a 7.9 % ABV. Poured a slight hazy deep amber to amber brown colored Bock with a three fingers beige creamy foamy end that had an excellent retention. Active carbonation. Some lacing. The aroma is roasted malts, bready, toffee, dark ripe fruits, plums, raisins, berries, note of chocolate. The flavour is caramel malts, toasted bread, dark fruits, plums. The balance maltiness / bitterness is a great success. The mouthfeel is slight oily with notes of smoke and a solid presence of the alcohol providing a real warming effect. This full bodied Bock has a lingering roasted and caramelized malty finish. An emblematic, very tasty, Doppelbock.
