Contrary to the geography suggested by the name, Russian Imperial Stout was originally brewed in 18th Century England. The name evolved as the Russian Imperial Court developed an early appreciation for this big, intense brew and provided a ready and eager export market. It's been speculated that no one had a greater appreciation for this rich, roasty elixir than Rasputin, the mystic wag (and favorite of the ladies of the court), who contributed to the ultimate downfall of Czar Nicholas II. Rasputin is probably best remembered for his dramatic exit. Having been deemed politically expendable, he was fed poisoned wine and tea cakes by his rivals. Surviving that, he was shot several times - whereupon he attacked his assailants. He finally succumbed when bound and stuffed through a hole in the ice to drown in the River Neva. Legends that attribute his tenacity to his appetite for Russian Imperial Stout are unproven. A rich, intense brew with a robust palate, a fruity nose and a warming finish. Very complex.

651ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a massive frothy creamy brownish head that sticks around fairly long and has a dark brown appearance. Great retention. Lively carbonation. Aromas of dark roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. Flavours are mostly of the malt variety, lots of chocolate and coffee notes, cocoa and roasted malts, some spices as well as notes of dark fruits. Smooth and slick mouthfeel. Abv is very well hidden. Good stuff!

Almost pitch black with very little ruby highlights. Beautiful big head, warm beige, fluffy, foamy, creamy with loads of bubbly lacing. Roasted malt aromas with chocolate notes and hints of vanilla. The flavours of the roasted malts are nicely balanced with some grassy hops, coffee. Bitterness lingers and gets stronger as you drink it. The mouthfeel is pretty wet, not really thick, but with some dryness in the finish. Very smooth overall, making this a really nice easy-drinking Russian Imperial Stout.

Clear dark ruby, almost black, big brown lsting lacing foam head. Great cold bitter coffee aroma. Nice bitter taste, coffee, some roast. Lasting. (Velp 201610)

Pours like black coffee with almost no head. This has about the average amount of bitterness that almost all imperial stouts seem to have. Even with the bitterness it still has a very solid amount of malt taste. I enjoyed this one but not in a hurry to try again.

This beer was a nice way to say "Hello!" Ordered this with Sushi at the Flying Fish in Alexandria, VA and it was a beauty of a beer. Pretty label, pretty color and curves to the bottle & the beer was served in a pretty glass. Presentation is everything! Then came the first sip....bittersweet chocolate, hints of vanilla and bourbon all in one. This one is a keeper! This beer was also a celebration beer in so many ways!

Like a dry bar of bittersweet chocolate this one has a distinctive flavor that will leave you wanting more. Sick of bourbon barrells and vanillas, get back to basics with this.

Wow! Pours a very dark black/brown color with the biggest head I have ever seen that take a longggg time to dissapear. Very fluffy. Aroma is delightful, full of roasted malts and coffee. Taste at first was extremely metallic but lessens a little as you drink on. Hints of roasted malts, coffee, and a tad bit of chocolate. mouthfeel is nothing special but above average. Finishes off nicely, only a tad dry. Overall a very complex beer.

first not a big fan of the style. Pours a black with a nice khaki head. The aroma of Coffee seemed strong with lot's of chocolate. The taste is chocolate, booze, chocolate covered coffee beans. layers of chocolate and roastiness. The stout is really smooth, mild carbonation and a medium to full body.
