Contrary to the geography suggested by the name, Russian Imperial Stout was originally brewed in 18th Century England. The name evolved as the Russian Imperial Court developed an early appreciation for this big, intense brew and provided a ready and eager export market. It's been speculated that no one had a greater appreciation for this rich, roasty elixir than Rasputin, the mystic wag (and favorite of the ladies of the court), who contributed to the ultimate downfall of Czar Nicholas II. Rasputin is probably best remembered for his dramatic exit. Having been deemed politically expendable, he was fed poisoned wine and tea cakes by his rivals. Surviving that, he was shot several times - whereupon he attacked his assailants. He finally succumbed when bound and stuffed through a hole in the ice to drown in the River Neva. Legends that attribute his tenacity to his appetite for Russian Imperial Stout are unproven. A rich, intense brew with a robust palate, a fruity nose and a warming finish. Very complex.

The best Imp. Stout ever made? Maybe, maybe not, but its the best I've had. Richly chocolate taste. Almost stickyness that coats your glass. Wonderful head.

12 oz stubby brown bottle from Vintage Estates, thanks Nuts. The price was only $2. The pour of this is opaque dark, just like used shovelhead oil. Good aroma of sweetish volatile roastiness, an indicator this will be a killer to the taste buds. The taste is not disappointing, dark, terrible and acrid. Back of the throat burned and charred sensations overwhelm. Tastes like lye, beer that has been filtered thru old campfire remains. Decent low medium carbonation. A loathing flavor that only a masochist could enjoy. Really mows over the girlie taste buds. Alky medicinal quality of bitterness. Does not hide the alky content what so ever. For a lager lover, this is not enjoyable, has no manners. Will not buy again, very difficult to enjoy. Just what I expected from a good impy stout and I concede that impy stout lovers will savor this stuff. Overall, impy stout is not my style, hence the low rating because I rate by how much I enjoy it, I am not a professional. Finish leaves a sharp acrid lasting impression on the back of the palate. Give me an Old Heathen for a chaser please. Quite an experience, will not buy again, but had to taste it at least once. On par with Bell’s Expedition.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet, Vika. Pours black with a light brown head. Aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, dark fruits, alcohol and hops. Some sweetness balanced with a nice and dry bitterness. Slightly hoppy finish. Delicious!

Bottle: Poured a black brown color with a thin jello light brown head. Hoppiness filled my nose as it sprang up out of the glass, this was slowly joined by fruit and sweet chocolate or molasses. The taste was dark chocolate and sweet roasted coffee like malt, it almost rotates between flavors. This is very impressive, or maybe I had just drank the worst stout ever before it. Either way I am kicking myself for giving my neighbor my other bottle!

Rated May 2006. Bottle pours with a deep deep amber colored body that supports a brown head of foam. Rich inviting roasty/chocolate/burnt malt aroma. Tastes just as it smells early on with little to no hint of alcohol influence. Chocolate and very dark (burnt) roasted malts that leave a dry feeling in your mouth. It is almost like chewing on half a hand full of chocolate malts. Right in the middle you get the sweet syrupy flavor. Full body and full flavor beer. Just delicious.

651ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a massive frothy creamy brownish head that sticks around fairly long and has a dark brown appearance. Great retention. Lively carbonation. Aromas of dark roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. Flavours are mostly of the malt variety, lots of chocolate and coffee notes, cocoa and roasted malts, some spices as well as notes of dark fruits. Smooth and slick mouthfeel. Abv is very well hidden. Good stuff!

Almost pitch black with very little ruby highlights. Beautiful big head, warm beige, fluffy, foamy, creamy with loads of bubbly lacing. Roasted malt aromas with chocolate notes and hints of vanilla. The flavours of the roasted malts are nicely balanced with some grassy hops, coffee. Bitterness lingers and gets stronger as you drink it. The mouthfeel is pretty wet, not really thick, but with some dryness in the finish. Very smooth overall, making this a really nice easy-drinking Russian Imperial Stout.
