First brewed in Tacuba, Mexico in 1925, Modelo Negra, formerly Negra Modelo, is a medium-bodied lager with slow-roasted caramel malts brewed for a rich, smooth taste. Brewed longer to enhance its flavors, Modelo Negra redefines "Dark Beer" because it is exceptionally drinkable and remarkably smooth. This Munich Dunkel-style Lager is brewed with galena and super galena hops as well as caramel malt, black malt and two and six row malt barley. These ingredients are meticulously brewed together to give Modelo Negra that bright, rich, amber hue and that iconic, medium-bodied flavor.

I tried this beer on February 11, 2010 at "Smokeless Joe's" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a translucent reddish-brown colour with a 1" light tan head. The aroma was sweet malt, caramel, and some weak hop tones. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour was sweet malt, sour grain, and a slight staleness.

As a general rule, there's only one day a year that I drink Mexican beer, Cinco DeMayo. And the only Mexican beer I voluntarily drink is Negra Modelo. With that said, on to the review. Slightly darker than amber color. Typical Mexican lager taste, with a slight hint of the darker malts. Head was nothing to speak of. Same for hops.

355 ml bottle into glass. Malt nose, quite sweet. Pours Ruby red with solid white head. Light body, malty sweet. Cornflakes sweet. Finish is less sweet but still sweet. Actually goes really well with the Mexican food I’m eating. Not sure I would drink it otherwise.

Bottle: Poured a dark reddish brown amber with thin white head. The aroma was barely and malts. The taste was similar and not to overwhelming. Very smooth beer, that added to the Mexican food we were enjoying.

35,5cl bottle from El Corte Inglés, Santa Cruz de Tenerife (shared by Alexcg - thanks!).
Pours dark brown with a reddish hue and an off-white head. Malty aroma with some roasty notes and hints of chocolate. Mild, malty and quite well balanced. A bit sweet with a lightly dry and bitter finish. Decent Mexican beer. Easy to drink and quite pleasant. (2013-01-05)Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Gold foiled 12 oz odd shaped bottle. Pours dark but not as dark as I thought it would be. Then I checked the other american dark lagers I’ve tried and many of those are actually lighter. There is no lacing or bubbles visible in the clear steeler stein. Smell is a little sweet. Initial taste is dark, but not roasty or hoppy offensive. Although there are no bubbles in it there is a decent amount of carbonation on the palate. A slight hint of fruit soaked in alcohol finish that linger for just a while. It is not real strong. Could drink a few of these without too much trouble.

Rated Nov. 2006. Pours deep copper with thin tan head. The aroma offers up sweet malts. The taste provides a mild caramel malt flavor with a hint of hops around the edges. Thin watery body.

355 ml bottle, as Negra Modelo, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 5.4%. Clear copper to amber colour, moderate off-white head. Strong aroma of caramel, treacle and brown bread. Smooth flavour, notes of malts, brown bread and caramel, sweet but not extreme, low bitterness. Pleasant to drink.
