A robust winter brew, Monteith’s Porter is a hearty strong beer reminiscent of the strength and colour of brawny oak beams ~ like an English tavern of the 1700’s. At that time brewers shipped barrels of their fine beer further afield and it was ‘Porters’ who would call at the tavern’s back door announcing the latest delivery. By the late 1700’s Porter rose to prominence on both sides of the Atlantic. Monteith’s winter Porter Ale has an intriguing burnt aroma ~ dark and smoky at first, then gradually evolving into malty burnt sugar notes. A tonic for the long nights of winter, Porter’s extra strength is fortifying, energising the taste buds, then finishing with the spicy zest of a premium hop variety. The key flavour highlight is its body ~ an ample beer crafted around premium malts and supported by a robust alcohol content. The result is a deep intricate woody colour and flavour. Just the sort of beer to consumed in front of a warm fire within a wood-lined pub, while the winds of winter batter the eaves outside. In keeping with the origins of the Porter beer style, Monteith’s Porter is allowed to develop it’s flavours during the bracing weeks of autumn, in preparation for the coming winter’s enjoyment. This beer is not pasteurized which is all the better to retain its natural flavour heritage. Monteith’s Porter is a striking example of the strong beers of old and the sturdy flavours that kept winter’s chill away while tales were told. The rich warming flavours with hints of dark malts match the full richness of winter roast, venison if possible and array of winter vegetables next to a roaring fire.
