Radler´ is a shandy-like beverage consisting of 50% golden lager beer and 50% lemonade. Though available in bottles nowadays, it is still tapped and mixed traditionally in the Löwenbräukeller. Amusing anecdote: It is said that ´Radler´ was first served in a beer garden in Deisenhofen near Munich, when one day in the summer of 1922 beer stocks were getting low, as herds of weekenders from Munich fancied a cool drink in the shady beer garden. The clever landlord had the brilliant idea to mix the beer that was running short with lemonade and to call his new beverage ´Radlermaß´. He of course pretended having created this beverage to make sure his guests, who had come to his beer garden by bike mainly, would have a safe ride home, as the ´Radlermaß´ was much lower in alcohol than lager beer.

Pours a huge foamy bubbly white head that dissipates fairly quickly and has a clear straw coloured appearance. Quite excessive carbonation. Aromas are citrusy with hints of lemon. Flavours are quite sweet and slightly sour, has a lot of tarty notes, some citrus and grassy hops. Medium retention. Bitterness in the finish. Not bad but nothing sticks out compared to other radlers. Still pretty refreshing though.

After rating the Waterloo Lemonade Radler, why not try the Labatt's Lowenbrau version (both brewed in Canada). Pours a clean light-golden colour with a smaller white cap, less retention and lacing. Aromas are lighter, less sour, as more lemonade than the lemon juice from the other. The taste is a little less sour and way less sweet. Again, mild grain finish. Pretty easy to drink on a hot summer day (more refreshing, crisp). I might just prefer the Brick's version a little more, but this is not bad.
