(An altbier base with some smoked malt and hemp.)

A very good hemp beer, strong malt base with a substantial bitterness level, remains nonetheless quite easy to drink...Something special possibly due to hemp but again really enjoyable...

Bottle: Clouded cola color with a small but lasting cap that laces the glass well. nice spicey-herbal-burnt treacle aroma. Prickley mouth feel that turns slick. Medium body. Flavor is spicey-herbal medicinal up front then this totally collapses mid gulp as some wonderful sorghum and cinnamon toast malts flood the palate. Finish starts to go bitter with medicial herbs overpowering the sweet bready malts....extremely drinkable! This is a very good hemp beer. We usually see hemp added to sharper, lighter ale recipies but this mellow, bready, sweet, almost lager-like red ale, with the hemp adding spice and bittering, makes for a great drinking specialty beer. I got turned onto hemp beers 2 summers ago and I have to say this is the best one I’ve tasted so far where all the ingredients just meld into a wonderful flavor profile that simply works well. I want more!!

Bottle: Poured a dirty brown color beer with a medium light brown head with pretty good retention. Aroma of malt is clearly detectable and pretty much comprised everything I could detect in aroma. Taste is also heavy with malt with a strange spice or herb that is reminiscent of cardboard. Body is a bit thin with a watery feels at the end. I couldn’t detect any hops in there. Overall this is OK but doesn’t stand a great chance of making my regular purchase list.

This hemp red ale pours a brown-red colour with a decent tanned head. Not much retention and lacing though. The nose is quite pleasant, with sweet caramel malt, nuts and hop. The mouthfeel is kind of waxy, but not as much as that carot brew I had a while back (La Lièvre Carotte du Lièvre). Not really carbonated, or very lightly, with a bubble here and there. Beautiful nutty start on the taste and goes to a bitter finish and aftertaste. Hints of apples kick slightly in, way into the aftertaste. Very nice and dry. Recommended, as well as their Oktoberfest.
