This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feard BrownShugga’ Ale. So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.6% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

355 ml bottle, at a breakfast joint in Petaluma. Deep golden to orange colour, large off-white head. Aroma and flavour of citrus, pine, caramel and sweet malts. Maybe a bit too far out on the sweet side for me, but still a fairly nice beer. Some alcohol in the finish. Anyway, I wouldn’t say that it sucks.

Pours a clean golden colour with a little orange hue. Nice head, almost creamy, long lasting with good lacing. Smells like an Imperial IPA with the grassy hops, caramel malts and citrus notes. The mouthfeel is pretty nice and smooth, with the alcohol well-hidden. Milder taste of citrus fruits with the hops rounding things in the finish. A very smooth finish. Goes down too well.

Brown Shugga Substitute Ale on the label. Pours a fairly big frothy off-white head and has a pale golden appearance. Lively carbonation. Some nice dirty lacing. Aromas of earthy and floral hops. Flavours are mostly on the hoppy side of things, oranges, resin, pineapple but also some notes of brown sugar which forms the sweeter side with hints of caramel. Well balanced between sweetness and bitterness though. Medium bodied mouthfeel. Very good.

Cheers for a brew in a good old court bottle! Major pine in the nose, and its a big nose, also orange and cotton candy. This is a great, long-lasting nose! Medium gold body does not hint and the flavor wallop this thing packs. Topped with a nice white head that lasts and laces. Mouth is medium and creamy with good carbonation level. Flavor, yup its got flavor! Bitter orange, pine resin, lightly roasted malts, some rye in the profile, cotton candy in mid taste, finish is bitter and sour and just a bit wet. (prejudice review, I loved Brown Shugga). This ones aces!

On the label. Lagunitas Sucks Brown Shugga Substitute Ale. 8% abv. No matter whats on the label, It's good stuff. Pineapple, melon, lemon stand out with some grapefruit and pine. Sweet malt for balance. Lacks a little in appearance but we can't all be perfect.

Pours a clear golden amber with a thick and rather persistent buff head. Aroma is strongly hoppy, more at an IPA, with hints of malt and caramel. Flavor is quite hoppy, yet more sweet than bitter, with hints of caramel and horehound in attendance. Texture is firm and smooth, yet lively and fizzy. IPA? Strong ale? Who cares - contrary to the name, it doesn’t suck at all.

This could just be the very best beer I have ever had... well maybe not that far, but just when every single american IIPA was blending into eachother, I had this. Very very floral, beautiful light playful bright peach smells and flavours. Other tropical fruits show up on the nose, like pineapple flowers, if those existed. Also so grapefruit, but in a way like the hop was in my nose, rather than stale and stored. Awesome!

Crystal clear orange pour with a sticky white head proves to be quite attractive in my shaker. Tropical fruit and pine combine to create a very nice and inviting IPA. Bitterness is aggressive initially, but this brew packs enough backbone to counteract it being purely one dimensional. Biscuity malts take the edge off and are met nicely witha suprising spicy note (rye, maybe?) Well done, Lagunitas.

Haven't had Lagunitas in several months, so been craving them. Mainly cause I haven't seen any new ones lately, so when I saw one single of this lying around I grabbed it. Based on the reviews, I was upset that there wasn't more...but honestly, this isn't one that I would miss. Weird, cause it reminds me a little like Lucky 13 (which is one of my favorites by them)...just a little bit weaker with less malt and hops. Clean/smooth mouthfeel though like all of their brews. Some fresh-dry hopped at the end. Maybe the rye takes over somewhat. It sounds funny that a 4.0 rating is a beer that I would not miss, but that just goes to show how great this brewery is!

2012 Version - Sucks Brown Shugga' Substitute Ale: Translucent golden honey pour, tight white head, nice lacing. Huge pine hops aroma, lightly sweet malt presence, more pine and slight dankness: very clean nose. Taste is hop forward, very piney, offset nicely by the malts. Big and pine, if you like that.
