"Not your Dad's Wimpy 30 Weight is how our original label used to describe this massive chewy and thick beer. Code named by our brewers-"The Big Black Nasty," this is monstrous dark ale is brewed to no particular style. Thick and sludgy like oil from the crankcase of a wheat threshing combine, Old Viscosity blurs the boundaries of Porter, Stout, Old Ale and Barleywines. A blended beer that mixes old and new brewing traditions into one finished beer, Old Viscosity starts out with 80% of the packaged beer produced from a stainless steel fermentation. It then joins another 20% Barrel Aged Old Viscosity (from a previous batch) that has been aging in bourbon barrels. The blend of the two beers yields an incredibly rich and luscious ale that reveals chocolate and cocoa notes melded to silky body of burnt wood, vanilla and ash. Malts- Two Row, Wheat, Domestic and English Crystal, Carafa III and Chocolate Malts Hops- German Magnum Yeast- White Labs California Ale and Proprietary Yeast Strains Original Gravity- 1.092 Terminal Gravity- 1.014 10.5 % ABV Draft- Available in Southern California and Arizona 22 Oz Bottles and Cases- At Port Brewing San Marcos and Pizza Port Carlsbad, San Clemente and Solana Beach and wherever better beers are sold.

2008 Vintage. Large tan head with tight bubbles. Light aroma of roasted malts and dark sugars. Body is opaque with no light passing through. Roasted malt and chocolate-like flavors. Ever so slight warming in the palate. Body not overly heavy. Roastyness lingers on the palate for quite some time after consumption. While it’s labeled a strong ale, I’d be more apt to call it a stout based on its flavor profile.

Sampled at the O-Town throwdown. Purchased at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido,CA, 10/06. This brew pours dark stout-like with thin light brown head. It smells like figs, dates, raisins and peppers. Also there are malts aromas of caramel and molasses. The flavor has malt sweetness, some molasses and sweet caramel. Quickly after I taste a bit of olive, slight pepper, dates and raisins. It’s tough picking out any hop notes.

Wow! This is the real deal. Pours like black pancake batter. Bubbly rich head. Smells stout. Super thick mouthfeel. Rich grain taste. Lingering burnt grain finish.

Bought in Oct 2011, opened yesterday. Unexpected nearly black pour with a creamy brown head--looks more like a stout than an old/strong ale. Tons of molasses, vanilla, oak, chocolate and caramel with a bit of coffee, roasted/smoked malt and dark earthy fruit in both aroma and taste. Sweet, sticky full body. Very good although the sweetness gets a bit cloying right at the end.

Thanks to slowrunner77 for this one - I've had the 'Older' Viscosity, but not the blended base beer. Bomber into a snifter at cellar temp, jet black with a brownish head that dissipates and laces the glass. Aromas of chocolate, toffee, and tree bark/earthiness. Mouthfeel is thinner than expected with a blast of carbonation. Flavors weave the aforementioned chocolate, roasted barley, and a slight oakiness that helps the mouthfeel. Great beer, slightly overcarbonated.

The beer is dark and sweet with a tan head. Flavor is rich with coffee and chocolate notes. Properly aged, you can detect the oak, but everything is well balanced and comes together as it should.

Interesting beer, almost barley wine meets impy stout if there is such a thing. Aroma is intriguing, almost smokey chocolate notes mixing with alcohol. Great rich black-brown appearance in the glass. Not as full bodied as you would think by looking at it. Flavor is oaky, caramely and some bits of impy but with no roast notes. Well aged and balanced and it's no wonder they don't know what to call the style, it's not like anything else I've tried.

I never had a Port Brewing beer before, so when I saw it locally I had to snatch it up. Pours as I expected, very dark and a nice brown head. I was surprised how long the foam stuck around on this high strength beer. Started very sweet and nutty with chocolate. Full body and very tasty as it warmed up. Very well done!

Bought this in San Luis Obispo (at Sandy's) while visiting my brother. Saved it so I could share it with my buddy who loves this dark, thick sh!t. Tonka dumptruck load of dark chocolate in this one. That is the most overriding flavor. As it warms up, it takes on a very bitter character. The more it warms up, the more difficult it becomes to drink...it seems to thicken up and becomes hard to swallow. The label doesn't lie...this pours like used 50W oil. I recently discovered that there is an "older" viscosity; I will have to try that if I can find it, but I will drink it cold.
