Malt is the key ingredient in our Köstritzer Schwarzbier. Because the particularly intensive roasting of our brewing barley into fine roasted malt ensures the fine malty taste and the characteristic strong dark colour. The result is a bottom-fermented black beer that impresses with its unique malt aroma and particularly refreshing taste.

Sampled 500 ml can, later also 500 ml bottle (now available in Norway). Advertised as 'Das Schwarze mit der Blonden Seele' (= The Black with the Blonde Soul). Dark brown to ruby colour, nearly black. Large brown head. Fairly weak but decent aroma, smells like German Schwarzbrot. Roasted malt flavour with coffee and burnt toast. A bit watery mouthfeel. (Is that what the brewers refer to as the 'blonde soul'?) By all means, this is a very drinkable Schwarzbier, but the style unfortunately seems to lack the rich velvety mouthfeel of a good stout or a Baltic porter. Still, this is a beer well worth sampling!

Pours out very deep dark brown with a nice brown head. The aroma is of light hops and mild malt. The mouthfeel is right on the verge of being thick. The taste are of roasted malts, mild chocolate and light hops.

On tap at Faust @ The Dean Hotel in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. One of the best I had in this style. Straight from Germany so that probably explains it. I mean, this is a lot better than Guinness Black Lager. Semi-creamy texture. Dark brown appearance. Flavors of caramel malt and roasted barley, with a very mild hop ending. I'll look out for this next time I am shopping in the imported aisle.

Pours a barely translucent cola brown with a fairly thick light tan head. Aroma has a core of roast malt and hints of caramel and woody hops. Flavor echoes the roast malt with woody and caramel sub-tones, rather tasty and pleasing. Smooth texture has about average thickness and decent fizz. Prost!

Pours a thick creamy brownish head. Ok lacing. Has a very dark brown/black appearance. Aromas of yeast, roasted malts, breads and resin hops. Also toasty and vanilla scents. Flavours are toasty, roasted malts, toffee, notes of caramel. Hints of vanilla, sweet/dark malts, grainy and molasses. Nice balance of sweetness and bitterness. Slightly oily, creamy mouthfeel and mouthcoating sensation. Lively carbonation. Goes down really smooth. Great beer!

So, this is the most famous Scwarzbier in the world. Rather tame for the style I suppose. It pours a solid black with a tight brown head. Roasty aroma and flavor prevails. The flavor does contain some sweet molasses like tones as well. Solid for what it is in my opinion.

Very dark, black almost with brownish foam head, lasting and lacing to glass. Aroma is caramel and coffee, bit weak. Taste is hoppy coffee, sometimes bit watery. Aftertaste is coffee long lasting. (Velp 201207)

Towering creamy tan head over a dark borwn body. Nice aroma, subdued malt and a suggestion of hops. Flavour was like this as well. Nice enough mouthfeel, not all that robust. This would be an excellent session beer.

didn't realize i had a 98th percentile brew when i picked this up. just felt like the style, and tonight was in the mood for a light flavorful beer - which descibes this one well. beautiful pour, near black with a khaki pillow on top. nice aroma of roasted malt, with a little nut, coffee, chocolate, and hops. similar flavor with a nice dry finish, and a kiss of smoke. light and refreshing.

It pours a solid dark-brown/black with a thin light-tan head and fairly copious lacing. A nutty aroma of roasted malts, light hops, coffee beans, chocolate, light raisin, light molasses, and mildly spicy. The mouthfeel is smooth, thick, and, rich. Flavors of roasted malts, chocolate malt/ovaltine, light hops, coffee, nuttiness, light raisin, bitterness, and spiciness. Excellent! ... very flavorful and refreshing..
