A delicious, dark bottom-fermented lager, Reinheitsgebot-brewed and a winner of the prestigious DLG medal. A great favourite in Bavaria, Ludwig Dunkel is brewed from dark malts, giving it a deep, chestnut colour and a slightly-sweetish, burnt wheat flavour, though with a nice clean finish.

Clear darker ruby with off-white foam head, small but lasting. Aroma is yeast and barley, noting sweet. Taste is good bitter, bit sparkling, high carbonation. Short bitter aftertaste. (Velp 201212)

500 ml bottle, from Rewe Getränkemarkt, Erding. ABV is 5.1%. Deep copper brown colour, big to moderate off-white head. Aroma of bakery (brown bread and pastry) and caramel malts, also some moderate fruity notes. The flavour is malty with caramel, but not too sweet, some lightly burnt notes and moderate hops in the finish. Well balanced and pleasant to drink. According to Roger Protz, this is one of the 300 beers you need to sample before you die. I would not limit myself to 300 beers, but König Ludwig Dunkel is definitely worth sampling (and having again the day after), as a fine example of Bavarian dunkels - a style that most of the time does not get the love it deserves on beer rating websites.

Dark rubyish amber colour with mediumsized head. Aroma is some chocolate, slight roast and also quite fruity. Flavour is slightly roasted malts along with some dark fruits and caramel. Ok, but not very exciting.

From the tap at Konig Ludwig's in Wiesbaden, pretty boring appearance, although the style doesn't get that fancy in the first place. Clear red-brown color, thin initial tan head, good retention, only ok lacing. The aroma was grassy caramel. The flavor was definite caramel malts with strong saaz grass-like hopping, not all that exciting or complex to dissect. Finish was neither sweet nor bitter, fairly well balanced, somewhat dry and crisp. Decent, but nothing special (I'm not sure I've had a "special" dark lager anyway).

After 7 years in Augsburg this is the one. Anyone heard of a Kirsch Giess (SP?)?? Had a few of those in the local Gasthaus and at some Fests. Kaltenburg has one of coolest breweries, They have a Jousting tournament and Fest that's a blast.

Dark brown colour, nice head, but not overly foamy. Very crisp and drinkable. Nice malty/burnt wheat flavour. Excellent mouthfeel. This has instantly become one of my favourites.

Good dark beer with a nice creamy head. Good flavor that is bitter as it finishes. Coffee like flavors hover around. Thin feel for a dark beer, but very good taste. Great appearence with a deep dark color. Nothing but good brews comming from Bavaria.
