OUR FLAGSHIP: BARKING SQUIRREL LAGER When your brewmaster comes up with a recipe as good as this one, you let him name the beer whatever he wants. Here's what makes our recipe so darn good: * 5% alcohol by volume * A rich burnt orange colour, darker than most lagers * A smooth, medium body with a bold, but pleasant, hop taste * Full of flavour, unlike your traditional 'cold-as-ice' beers with no taste * Made with only the best ingredients, including Canadian & English Malts, and German & Czech Hops

Pours clear coppery amber with a thick, though effervescent, pale buff head. Aroma is crisp, malty, a little fruity - mostly pear plus a little apple. Flavor has a strong malty tone supported by a pear note and hints of hops. Is that a snippet of caramel? Texture has decent body and fairly lively fizz. Get squirrelly!

A dollar a pint so what the hell. Pours a dark orange amber with an eight finger head that takes it god damned time going down. Crystal clear with mild carbonation. Aroma is malty and dry hopped with a hint of soap. Taste is very metallic and flat with hint of malts. Quite dry too. Only beer I have ever had where it get too flat to drink when you pour it in a glass. God damned drain pour if you pour it in a glass, otherwise it is barely drinkable.

Pours a light amber color. Smell is mild, some malts. Tasste is light, some mild hops, refreshing but bland. Feels light in the mouth and overall is a mediocre beer.

Had at the Secret Garden Restaurant which is located directly across from Niagara Falls, and frankly after walking around all day, me and M.A needed to sit and have a drink. I have never been a fan of vienna's but i was tired and needed a cold beer, this hit the spot! my first draft beer on Canadian soil! .. pours a simple copper amber .. mild foam .. some caramel .. medium mouth. refreshing for what it is and enjoyable after a long day...

Had this one a couple of times on tap at a local pub close to my work. Now, testing it from the can. Pours a clean deep amber colour with an off-white foamy head that does not last long, but leaves a bit of soapy lace. Malty scent with notes of caramel, nuts and hop. Pretty much the same for the taste with a mild nutty aftertaste. Wet mouthfeel as this is a beer to refresh people, but have a bit more taste than regular swills. Personally, I am not a fan of the hop they use in this one, but still a decent brew.

Love the name, the beer not as much. On tap at Highlander Pub, head was pretty creamy and not too thick. Glass about 1/2 empty, still a little bit of head left! Moderate lacing though. Tasted ok as it was hot and humid today, so almost any beer would have been fine. Just ok, nothing special.

Bub gave me this beer at his estate in Sterling On. I have had one other Hop City beer on tap in a family restaurant in Kitchener On., and was pleasantly surprised by the balance and flavour, good beer. This beer was a disappointment It claims some victory in a Belgian beer competition, probably because it is in some obscure beer category "Vienna amber lager". I suggest a little less caramel malt and lots more hop essence. Buy the way there are too many beer awards because there are too many categories. God Bless, and let the good guys win.

Gag me with a spoon....please. Hop City Brewing is a wholly owned subsidiary of Moosehead, but they want you to believe that this is craft (when it is actually crap) so they don't put the Moosehead affiliation anywhere on the can. It's a very weak colour for a Vienna, and the aroma and taste both have skunkiness in them. Remember, this is craP, not craFT.

I tried this beer on October 22, 2011 after purchasing from the Yonge/Wellesley LCBO outlet in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer pours a translucent golden red colour with a thin short-lived light tan coloured head. The aroma is light caramel, grains, and some floral hops. The mouithfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour is light sweet malt, grass, and cereals.

On tap: Puts a clear amber lager in the glass with a 2 finger sticky cap...modest retention. Weak lacing. Light malty aroma with some sweetness, non descript hopping with slight apple tones. Taste has the malt dominate the front side with a blend of pale and caramel maltiness which then gets balanced off with some fruit and hop bittering. Clean sharp finish but caramel malt predominates killing any hope the hops had to dry out the finish. Hard mineral mouth feel (hard water?) - malty caramel fruity character.....all that’s left to say is; "what is this"? If it is a lager or ’lale’ there is so many tastes here out of place (fruity esters in lager?). If it’s an amber lager it is passable but uninspired. It sure is not a bock or any style of standard lager I’m familiar with....possibly a weak steam beer or weak Creemore clone... Needs work.
