Copper in colour, it has a deep floral nose with nutty malt overtones, and has a mild but lingering hop finish. It has the colour and hop ratio of the original Bavarian lagers.

The Heritage Traditional Dark Lager is a very dark beer that wafts of roasted malt and some fruit essences. The flavour is mild, not too sweet, and not too bitter. MNainly malt with some chocalte hints.

Retro stubbie bottle pours a light cola colored beer in the tumbler. Much lighter brown that the Dunkels I’m used to drinking. Light nose....some sweetness, succulent fruits and a bit of toasted grain..not as malty-aromatic as a dunkel lager. Moderate malt spine, slightly thin body, soapy mouth feel, sharp ale-like character. You get some of the toasted malts and sweetness up front...but just for a second...then all this pale ale fruitiness from ale yeast and sharp citrus-cedar tastes from ale hopping kicks you in the palate..the finish is wet with an-ale like "bite" an more light fruit esters... then a bittering after taste. This is a dark pale ale? This is no dunkel in any "traditional" sense... this is a dark-malted pale ale in taste and character and as such not a bad one...the brewer tells me that this beer uses the same California Common steam beer yeast as Anchor, and is fermented at warmer ale temperatures which produce the fruity esters. So it appears what we have here is a unique hybrid beer...it’s either a dunkel steam beer or a dark cream ale...so in that respect the only "traditional" thing about this hybrid beer is the retro stubbie bottle. :-)

Tap: Poured a clear black beer with an almost non-visible head. Carbonation is quite low which doesn’t augur too well. Aroma is quite weak with a small touch of malt and hops coming out of my glass. Taste is better then expected when starting with subtle sweet taste and ending with a good bitter final. Overall, this is a good refreshing drink lacking some carbonation and probably the chocolate/nutty taste of regular dunkel.

Tried this beer for the first time at Zaphod's in Ottawa, on tap, a few years ago. Was blown away ! Now I buy it in a 6 pack of stubbies. I have also bought this beer in a 20 litres and 50 litres for poker nights. Pours a dark amber-red colour with a medium beige head. Small amount of lacing. Low carbonation, but a good malt scent. Starts with a fruity-sweet taste and finishes with a mild bitter bite. Still prefer this one on tap. This brew kills the other one, Premium Lager, that they make. One of my favorite session beer.
