Horndean Special Bitter (HSB) was first brewed in 1959 to meet a growing demand for a higher strength bitter. Sales growth was slow throughout the sixties when BBB and the cask milds were the predominant Gales beers. However, following the creation of CAMRA and the greater public interest in cask conditioned beer, HSB sales grew throughout the seventies and eighties. Today it is Gales major brand, enjoying great success in the Free Trade and as a guest beer for other brewers as well as being the flagship beer in Gales tied estate.

March 2004: Bottle Conditioned. Yeh, this is quite like their bottled mild. Dark & malty, with perhaps a slightly burnt flavour. More hoppy, slightly sweeter but not the cloying sweetness I had expected from reading reviews of this. A great bitter, and one of the best bottled bitters about. (3.6/5) June 2004: Cask conditioned, Royal Standard, Wooburn Common, Bucks (gravity dispense). Best beer of the night by far. This was a sweet and very complex ale with hints of toffee, grape and dried fruits. (3.7/5). May 2006: Can from Waitrose. Pours a deep brown colour with a thin but dense white head. Aroma is of a premium bitter rich in sweet malt and fruit. To taste there is loads of caramel, malt, dried fruit. Notes of toffee and fruitcake, some hop bitterness in the finish. Thick mouthfeel, not bad condition for a can but lacks the fresh feeling a cask gives.

Cask at The Hogshead, Ipswich (while it was still brewed by Gale's). Deep amber to brown colour. Moderate aroma of English malt vinegar and plums. The flavour is dusty malty with notes of malt vinegar and sour fruits. Dusty hops finish.

Rating from 2002. Medium brown color, large head. Toasted malt flavor, nicely hopped. Good balance. Nice flavor, large body. Mouthfeel is full and round. Smooth taste, somewhat dry. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is malty and full, very slight bitterness.

Dark reddish amber colour with small off-white head. Aroma is freshly cut pinewood along with hints of some grassyness and caramel. Flavour is caramel malts, wood along with some slightly nutty notes.

Poured a hazy copper color with a thin off white head. Lightly spiced, and sweet malt aroma. Lightly hopped citrus taste, lots of malt. Just below average.

Mid-brown beer with a fruity aroma. The full-bodied, sweet and fruity taste, with some maltiness, follows through to the aftertaste. A bit too sweet for my pleasure.

This is the best beer I have ever had from a can. It has a nice fruity, slightly winey aroma and a nice amber color. Nice balance of hops and malt. This is a great beer for the price, a case of 16 oz. cans cost about $30.
