Nice black colored beer with a small foamy textured, light tan head. There's not much hang time and no lacing. Bitter, smokey chocolate and citric dominates the profile. Medium bodied and smooth.

I liked this one. Not super strong for an IPS, so drinks fairly easy. I didnt' even notice the 8.1%, felt more like 6-7%.....except for the buzz of course! The chocolate and coffee stand out, but not overwhelming of coffee. Good hop finish too. Tastes sort of like one of my favorite stouts (8-ball), but more chocolate/coffee, stronger, and not as smooth.

Aroma is strong and smoky with firm tones of fine coffee and unsweetened chocolate. It pours a deep, opaque coffee brown with a nice tan head. Flavor is rich, like a fine and slightly sweet mocha with hints of molasses and licorice. Sublime texture is smooth and tingly, quite pleasing.

Beer number 6 of my 12 Beers of Christmas 2009. A near black pour with a perfect sustained tight cream head and beautiful massive lacing. Big cocoa upfront then sweet malts, coffee and molasses in the rich aromas. Taste is bittersweet chocolate with some coffee, toffee, roasted malts, and warming goodness in a slight bitter finish. Big nice beautiful stout that is a great treat.

Sampled from bottle. Pours opaque blackened-brown with a generous tan head. Pleasant cocoa aroma that has cinnamon notes. Balanced. Roasted malt and cocoa flavor. Nice fruitiness from the yeast. The cocoa makes it a little bitter in the finish. Full-bodied and smooth. After having brewed a few chocolate stouts, I'm very impressed with the beer in that there is pretty good head retention and the balance of the beer accentuates the chocolate well. Solid.

Pours black with short, airy head. Aroma boasts dark chocolate and toasted wood notes. The flavor is rich, rich, rich with chocolate. Easily the most chocolately beer I've tried. It's a perfect semi-sweet chocolate with enough coffee character to lend a clean, dry finish. Medium bodied with ample carbonation. Notable warming.

A vigorous pour produces a three-finger thick, darkly browned, tan colored head. The beer is an almost black, concentrated, deeply burnt brown color that is not quite opaque when held up directly to the light as it shows flashes of ruby hues. Deeply roast as this smells of burnt grain-husks, burnt bread crust, spent overly roasted espresso grounds and just an overall, overly astringent deep burnt character. While this is way to focused on the burn malt aromas there is a touch of bread-like, dark malt character here and perhaps a hint of dark chocolate aromatics. After coming back to the aroma after walking my dogs I notice a burnt cherry note that is quite interesting, but alas fleeting.

Sweet tasting & creamy feeling up front, but then the burnt malt notes swoop in and turn this overly acidic, incredibly burnt tasting and thin. Up front and somewhat in the finish some dark chocolate flavors are noticeable. Acrid, bitter burnt malt notes combine with a touch of warming alcohol in the finish. As the beer warms up a bit it becomes a bit less like sipping on burnt charcoal juice, but doesn't really lose the brunt acidity; basically the burnt, acrid bitterness reduces just a smidge, but not enough to make this much better. Burnt fruit notes of blackened cherries and roasted berries do become noticeable though.

This is a great example of a completely unbalanced roasted grain character; it is like the unbalanced double IPA of roasted grain, this doesn't have nearly enough of the paler malt notes that are needed to hold this amount of roast grain in check. While not undrinkable, this just doesn't really work for me; for those who like heavily roasted things (and I mean heavily roasted as I like a good black espresso) then this might be for you.

A black appearance with a beige head. The aroma was coffee and chocolate. The flavor was quite roasty with more chocolate and coffee showing through. The mouthfeel was a bit thin. The aftertaste was rather bitter. Overall this was a pretty good but not great stout.
