This beer has been 14 months in the making. That is, it has been resting in Fort Collins cellars for twelve months, then it was transferred and aged in Stranahan's Whiskey barrels for an additional eight weeks. Barrel Licked Bock takes Fort Collins' GABF award winning Doppel Bock, then ages it. The result is light hop bitterness, mild vanilla spice, and charred notes built on an already smoky, warming and smooth brew. Suggested food pairings are smoked meats, roasted vegetables, and brick oven pizza. Barrel Licked Bock will be released on April 1st on draft and in 22oz bottles.

this beer was a tasty unique beer. the aroma was intense and complex...vanilla, oak, malt, a touch of whisky. nice mahogony/ruby color. mf is smooth, medium bodied, and a little slick. flavor is similar to the aroma, but the hint of smoke in the aroma is no longer just a hint in the flavor. it lingers on the finish with all the other easy drinking but complex goodness. hides the abv very well. underated beer! via trade w/ kinger.

Pours a nice clear mahogany with a fairly thick pale tan head that is frothy and fine-bubbled. Aroma is rather strong, malty with an overtone of molasses and a good alcohol nip. Lip-smacking malty flavor has a strong molasses component and quite an alcohol bite, rather like a barleywine. Texture is rough and rowdy, quite fizzy so it seems to dance on the tongue and canter down the pipes.

A diminishing and fizzy head sits atop a copper-brown body, leaving some good spots of lacing. Upfront smoked malt aroma with hints of meat and campfire. A brush of whiskey and wood followed by a faint fruitiness. The aroma fills the air and pulls you in. Clean and medium bodied, sweet and smoky with a soft creaminess. No trace of the high alcohol content. Caramel and doughnut flavors are soon washed out by smoke and wood. Mild bourbon taste is evident in the background and leads way to plums and vanilla. This is one solid beer, not as big as I was expecting which is what makes it fairly easy and enjoyable. The smoked malt is well portioned and the bourbon barrel influence is constantly in the back ground.

A solid pour produces a four finger thick, amber tinged, tan colored head. The beer is dark amber, red color that shows a brilliantly clear, red-cranberry hue when held up to the light. The aroma has a light smokiness to it that adds a nice richness to the nose. This is followed by some toasty malt character that adds a malty, whole grain character. There is also a sweet, concentrated malt notes that has a Maillard browning richness and caramelized character. Salty, smoky, peat like notes reside on top of a some spicy barrel notes. Some of the sweetness I now realize is accentuated by a light toasted coconut note that must be from the barrel. Speaking of which, the barrel influence is quite subtle here, in fact if I hadn’t known, I might not have even guessed that this had any barrel aging based upon the aroma. The aroma is nice and rich and I like the complex character that the touch of smoke malt has and how it combines with the soft barrel influence.

Sweet tasting without being cloying, but this does have both a clean malt sweetness as well as a rich, concentrated malt, complex-caramelized malt character. The beer finishes with a touch of spicy oak and some warming alcohol, both of which add a touch of pepper to the finish. The smoke adds a subtle complexity to the flavor that adds a hint of saltiness, which along with subtle Bourbon flavors accentuates some peat like flavors. The bourbon is just a hair more noticeable in the flavor than it was in the nose, I like that it is quite subtle here, but it does add a sort of sweet bourbon flavor as well as some of the other notes. Rich caramelized notes combine with the barrel to produce a hint of toasted, sweetened coconut flavors. This definitely has the heft and mouthfeel of a Doppelbock; rich without being too heavy, nice and chewy, yet strangely this is quite drinkable.

This beer is quite nice, I really like how subtle the Barrel influence is, but it could definitely use a bit more smoke influence. Though if you let this beer warm significantly up the smoke becomes a bit more noticeable.

Lets just say I am glad there is more to beer than just the aroma.. we would be in trouble here. The lager yeast is coming trough like green bottle skunky feet. Pours a nice Brown with a reddish tint to it. White head lasted a minute. To be honest I thought the carbonation and mouthfeel were quite pleasant. I felt it to be smooth and balanced and not watery at all..I really got into the flavor. Smokey and sweet with lots of vanilla. Can very much tell it has been ged in wood for a bit. The finish was a bit hot but the ABV is 10.2%. The flavor and mouthfeel was really nice.... just don't smell it....

22 oz bottle. Pours a clear copper with a small off white head (even after a vigorous pour) that quickly diminishes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is vanilla, alcohol, sweet caramel, and some smoke.

The flavor is sweet caramel malts and vanilla with a smoky lightly bitter finish. As it warms more burnt smoke comes out. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation and is kind of watery.

Overall, I think I like the regular doppelbock better. This is a little too much on the sweet vanilla side and the smoke is more reserved and charred.
