Creemore Springs Altbier is a traditional German-style ale brewed with the help of Düsseldorf's historic Zum Schlüssel brewpub. Creemore Springs brewmaster Gordon Fuller and head brewer Bryan Egan visited Zum Schlüssel earlier this year to learn about altbier in the city where it was born, and the brewers there generously shared some of their centuries-old proprietary yeast which was used to brew Creemore's version of the style. Altbier is a clean-tasting, copper-colored ale with a finely balanced, noble hop bitterness and a rich, almost nutty maltiness. In the finish, it impresses with gently lingering hop aroma. The unique character of the Altbier stems largely from the special yeast with which it is fermented. Altbier yeast ferments the beer very slowly at a very low temperature (cold-fermented). After fermentation, Altbier, unlike normal ales, is matured and mellowed for several weeks close to the freezing point. In other words, in the cellar, Altbier is treated more like a lager than an ale.

Poured a generous amount of creamy off-white head. Good lacing and retention. Has a dark coppery appearance. Aromas of wheats and grains are there, not too offensive. Flavours are all over, good balance of hops and malts, nutty, a bit yeasty. Some bitterness on the palate. Not bad.

New can found at the LCBO, different branding than a typical Creemore beer. Copper coloured beer with a decent head. Aroma is more hoppy than a lot of Creemore products. Flavour tends towards a typical German alt with a nice balance between malt and hops.

The beer pours a copper colour with a thin white head. The aroma was yeast, grains, and some herbal hoppiness. Mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour is slightly sweet, some yeastiness, and some grains. Canadian Altbiers tend to be good, but never great -

Can from brewery” pours a clear lush deep copper with red highlights. A decent sticky 2 finger cap and moderate carbonation. Pungent aroma of toasty-sweet malts over the earthy notes of noble hops clean malty nose to it. Flavour is intense but on target for the Altbier style – big chewy toasty bready malts in front in remarkable balance with the woody/herbal noble hop bite, clean toasty-nutty finish with increasing bittering to a beautiful well balanced finale and light hop aftertaste. A flavourful, robust, easy drinking German amber ale, hard to fault that. This is probably the best commercial Altbier in Canada as good or better than German commercial Alts. Another solid offering from Creemore who keep me coming back.

Single can, but from an open 12-pack at the LCBO. Pours a dark amber colour that is clear with a big frothy light-beige head, with average retention and lots of dirty-foam lace. Big aromas of bread and darker cereal, with some alcohol, caramel and hop. Very active tiny bubble carbonation creating a nice creamy top on the brew. It even give the mouthfeel a creaminess. Very well-balanced taste between the cereal malts and some hoppy bitterness. Beautiful collaboration between this Ontario brewer and a German specialist of the Altbier, Zum Schlüssel. Definitely worth trying !
