Rock Brothers Brewing Company has announced plans to brew JJ Grey's own custom craft beer, a special "Nare Sugar Brown" Ale, available this November. JJ is the second musical act to partner with Rock Brothers Brewing, the Tampa Bay-based company, that is creating microbrews for musicians around the country. “JJ’s grandfather drank coffee without sugar, or ‘nare sugar’ as he called it,” according to Kevin Lilly, a co-founder Rock Brothers, “and that phrase stuck with JJ throughout his life.” He said Nare Sugar Brown has a sweetness to it, but is made without sugar. He called the name Nare Sugar Brown, “a perfect fit.” Nare Sugar Brown is scheduled for release on November 1st, in conjunction with JJ Grey & Mofro's concert at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg, FL, and at Revolution in Fort Lauderdale, FL on November 2nd.

Had an opportunity to try this on guest tap in the Tampa area at Green Bench brewery, but elected to try strictly a flight of Green Bench brews. I think fresh on tap would be better, as this had extremely high carbonation buildup in the can. Not sure if built up during distribution or supposed to be that way. Had to be poured super slow to avoid the head overflowing. Flavor grew on me with each sample. Heavy caramel malt, light chocolate malt and coffee. For "nare sugar" there definitely is a lot of sweetness going on. Nice appearance and flavor, but the other characteristics could use some improvement.

An amber-red in color with a big fluffy textured, light beige head rising above. There's good hang time on the head with a thick cap left behind. Bitter, burnt coffee, molasses and caramel. Light, effervescent and an easy drink.
