Miner Mishap is our version of a traditional German Schwarzbier, also known as "Black Pilsner" or simply "Black Lager." our traditional version was formulated by our friend William Scott (or Scotty as he's known around the brewery), an award-winning homebrewer and certified beer judge who has always been very generous about sharing his creations and his seemingly unlimited knowledge of beer. It seemed only fitting that since we started out as a homebrewery, we would try and recreate one of Scotty's homebrews (which are typically 5 or 10 gallon batched) here in our 15 barrel (465 gallon) brewhouse. Brewed almost entirely with malt imported from Weyermann Specialty Malts in Bamberg, Germany and hopped with imported German Perle and Hallertaur Mittlefreu hops, Miner Mishap is truly a one-of-a-kind original.

One of my favorite styles; this bottle courtesy of pfoxyjohn. Thinnish black pour with little head nor lacing. Roasted malts, molasses, slight java in the aromas. Taste is rich with a great toasted malt base tha tis slightly sweet and a very slight black coffee flavor. No bitter linger. Very nice for the style - thank you John - this on has been on the wish list for a while. Big Yes.

Part of my microbrew of the month selection for January. This beer pours a black color with a small head. Nice lacing around my glass. Smell of sweet with roasted notes. Flavor is nice and fulfilling. Not bad.

From a bottle, poured very dark with a thin white head. Notes of coffee and chocolate. The taste was surprisingly stronger than what I was expecting. I found this very tasty and if it was available here would definitley have this in my frige consistantly.

Opaque black with just a hint of red highlights. Nice nose of roasted malt. Great mouthfeel with a tinge of bitterness and deep coffee-sweet taste. Tangy and spritely, too but mostly complex robust deep flavors. Nicely crafted version of a great style. MUSIC: 'Miner's Refrain' by Gillian Welch

From the bottle. Pours a dark brown/black with a nice tan head. Aroma is slightly sweet and surprisingly strong. Flavor has a nice hop finish with a well balanced sweetness up front. A really good beer. Thanks to Brett for trading with Dansting who gave me a bottle to try.

Sampled from bottle and draft at the brewery. Certainly my favorite from Choc. It's not often one can sample a bottle-conditioned lager, so here's your chance - and an excellent example of the style.

Pours black with short head but excellent lacing. Aroma is roasty with sweet, vanilla topnotes. The flavor is balanced, clean, satisfying. Light-to-medium bodied and well carbonated. Fun showing by the Krebs Brewing Co.
