The Old Port Winter Ale has brought inner warmth and happiness to both Mainers and those from away for the past several winters. The 7.3% ABV makes our winter seasonal a Strong Ale by style. But the deep mahogany color, thick foamy head, solid malt body, and assertive hop flavor make it a worthy reward for reaching the end of another Maine winter's day.

Poured from a bottle to a very dark chestnut colors with a very thin head that clung to the sides of the glass. The aroma was malty with a hint of nuts and at the very end a touch of alcohol. The taste was an extremely strong malt flavor with heavy feel in the mouth. I like this as a winter/old ale. I think this is a good old ale and would drink it if we could get it here.

It was ok.. I wanted it to be a bit stronger than it was and I did not notice any of the cherry tones that were described. It tasted ok. I thik I can pass on this beer. A tan head that last a bit. Medium body but the flavor lacked something.

From a bottle. Pours a clear brown with an off-white head. Aroma of malts and some spice. Not very strong though. Flavor is pretty typical. Malty with a nice hoppiness at the back. Some spice undertone as well. An ok beer.

Old port ale was like a spiced esb........a good beer throughout. Nothing to blow you away, just brewed in good taste. This had a toffee color with some attractive lacing. A fruity aroma and malty notes of bread and caramel, with some lightly sweet candy notes and bitter peppery spice. a medium body. Overall a tasty flavor and surprisingly refreshing

Bottle. Poured a cloudy, amber color with a medium head. Small lacing. Sweet aroma. Nice mouthfeel. Flavor of malt with good balance of hops. Pretty good beer.

A friend gave me 3 different types from this brewery. Here is the first. Note: 12 oz bottle 7 months past "Drink By" date. Interesting color. Looks almost like a barley wine at first. Very dark. Has a nice dense head and looks great in the glass. No real smell. Medium bodied in taste. Not bitter but no real hop presence. Unusual. Alcohol is well masked. I wish I had another because I can't make up my mind if I like it or not. An unusual brew I would like to try again.

Amongst the two cases of beer that I brought back from Maine with me included bottles of both Carrabassett and Casco Bay Winter Ale. And though I had both both on draught at The Great Lost Bear beerbar in Portland, this review will cover the bottled versions of these nearly-identical Winter Beers.
Appearence: Dark and semi-mysterious. Brown highlights, with a consistent thin head on top. Scant Belgian lace.
Smell: Malty, with hints of some hops. Though no serious faults here, I would prefer something more from the aroma. It's the Holiday season -- live it up a little...!
Taste: Finally, something noteworthy. An initial postive reaction, coupled with a nice firm maltiness in the front and back. Hops enough to balance, but otherwise a no-show.
Mouthfeel: Comes and goes without much of an impression.
Normally, I would say something that a beer that is "easy to drink" would have high marks in this category. But when it comes to Winter/Holiday ales, my thinking is that the beer should leave something of a lasting impression, and should therefore be a bit less "easy drinking" than the norm. This doesn't do much for me, which is a shame.

Deep Amber color, medium head. Aroma is malty and slightly spicy. A medium bodied Strong ale. Malty and hoppy. Malts are very strong, slightly smoky. Hops are pronounced and slightly spicy. There are some spices working here as well, the usual suspects, nutmeg, allspice and cinnamon. The 7.3 % alcohol is evident, but yet its still a very warming beer. The taste smoothes and mellow a bit as it warms. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean. Aftertaste is slightly bitter, with a pronounce alcohol bite.

I thought that the Old Port Ale was very good, the best winter brew that I had all season. Very similar to Sam Adams Winter Lager, though the Old Port Ale posseses a very unique floral, sweet hoppy flavor that I have experienced in no other beer. A typical winter brew in color and palate, though slightly above and beyond, making it a specail treat. In short, great beer.
