Carling Old Vienna / Molson OV

Bottle, at the Secret Garden Restaurant across from Niagara Falls after walking around the falls all day. pours a deep gold .. medium foam .. light corn and hay .. light lacing .. a simple refreshing lager for when you are really tired..

This is a beer I have never enjoyed, either as a Carling O'Keefe product, or it's later Molson days. It's one of those beers that you order late night at a half empty bar when you want a drink, and they are out of everything else!

I've only tried this a couple of times. It is not a young man's beer. Colour - medium gold, white frothy head. Aroma - grainy, sweet. Mouthfeel - medium. Flavour - sweet up front,m bitter end. Overall - not bad, worth visiting.

Two previous posters described this beer aptly. This beer is widely (and sadly) known across Canada as 'Old Vagina'. And it is a Vienna style lager. I have always like OV, and this is going back to the Carling O'Keefe days, in fact, I have a Carling O'Keefe Ol' Vienna knight shaped bottle opener from the late 50s which I still use regularly. This is a beer with flavour, unlike a lot of the water served in Canada under the guise of 'beer'. It is golden in colour with a grainy, malty aroma that lasts throughout the beer. The beer rolls on the tongue with some mild carbonation and a slight grainy taste that turns to a malty aftertaste. This is a beer that I often forget is still out there.

My goal in June 2007 was to rate all the beer I've tried. That meant rating the bad ones along with the good ones. This is one of the bad ones. Where I went to University, this beer had the raunchy nickname of "'Ol Vag___", but I was not informed of that until after trying it. This is one of the old Carling O'Keefe products (Carling O'Keefe's Ol' Vienna Lager) that was popular in the late 70s and early 80s complete with television commercials. It pours a weak yellow colour with little head. The aroma was very skunky (every time I have tried this). The taste is rather skunky as well, not a friend to the mouth at all. Strong carbonation, and very little discernable maltiness. The more I thought about it, the less I liked it. After a couple, I was able to safely declare it among the worst Canadian beer I had ever tasted.

This beer has been misclassified. This is the O'Keefe brand lager known as Old Vienna that molson bought out in the seventies. It still bears the blue lable and OKeefe knight. Molson has kept the OKeefe Old Vienna (O.V.) formula pretty well untouched. OV is a Canadianized version of the sweeter vienna lagers. It is sweeter than most Canandian mega brews. The last time I had this beer was when my high school buddy used to snich a few of his dad's beers. I never really liked this beer then so I have had no desire to buy it regularly since. I had one recently at a pub down town and I realized it isn't as bad as I remembered. Pours a darker straw color, small white head that laces out, medium carbonation, smells of cooked grain, fusil sweetness and corn aromas. Starts crisp then sits with a medium light malty body then finishes thinly with a sweet after taste. Not a really memorable beer but it has been a staple in Canadian beer stores for 50 years so It must have a following among older Canadian beer drinkers.

Old Vienna is one of my good go-to easy-drinking lagers. It pours a golden colour with a medium head and carbonation. A rim of foam is formed around the glass, leaving lace as I sip through. The aroma is typical grain malt. The taste starts off slightly bitter and hits a smooth finish. The aftertaste is like the corn I enjoy, found in High Life. One good swill.

There really is no aroma, so a number "2 worst" rating is way too arbitrary, as if there is no aroma, it realistically can't be offensive. However, seeing as there is no aroma, I can't rate it any higher than a 2. As far as everything else, this is a mass produced beer meant for swilling and should only be drank out of the bottle and ice cold, as out of the glass it is more watery tasting and has no head and no lacing. Having said that, as far as macro swill goes, it's better than most, just don't let it get warm.

I have relatives that swear by this beer. I don't enjoy it as much these days but back in my lumberjacking days it was all that me and the boys even thought about touching.

buck for buck one of the best beers out there. Old Vagina dosn't fuck around. It has a unique taste, and hardly any after taste. Goes down smooth. Probably your dads favorite brew.
