Brigand Belgian Ale

My bottle has a much cooler label picturing a medieval archer. This was quite good, I was expecting a bit more. I inferred from the label that this was a Belgian Strong Ale...but now I see that it is just a plain old regular Belgian ale. Flavors consist of chocolate, raisins, caramel...a bit light, and the flavors are not as strong as they should be. A little bit of that sweet Belgian yest at play, and some finishing bitterness that rounds off the experience. A nice beer, but nothing to go out of one's way for.

Pours out of the bottle being murky yellow and forming a small head that lasts a few minutes. Aroma has malt and alcohol and a small hint of fruit. A really big lot of carbonation in this one, what can be found in the flavours. Taste is quite bitter, with a slight sweet aftertaste. A bit tingly on the tongue because of the carbonoxide. Decent beer, one to try once or twice and maybe pickup again after some time.

A copper colored beer with a moderately sized tight bubbled, creamy textured, white head rising above. There's decent hang time here. A ringlet and light cap are what's left behind. The nose is candied scents. The tasting is some of that with raisins, pronounced and an added complexity of alcohol and yeast. Lots of carbonation in this one. Really dominates the palate with a full body.

I had heard mixed things about this beer so I was a little concerned about what I might be trying, especially as 'Belgian Ale' can mean multiple things to multiple people. This is a cloudy orange beer, almost American IPA like. The aroma is sweet malt, alcohol, and lots of sweet fruit hints. The flavour is malty, yeasty, with hints of light fruit. No need to try it more than once.......simply average.

The aroma was the highlight of this one... aside from the name. I'll admit, I saw it and bought it solely on name having no knowledge whatsoever of the product. The wonderful apple/cheery/cranberry(?) aroma could not compensate for the murky pour of amber/orange with a slight to non-existent head and some sort of unidentifiable souresque flavor. Thin on the pallette. Skip it.

A new discovery on tap at the Sharp Edge Brasserie. Brigand has an impressive foggy golden hue that holds up an unimpressive ring of a very few suds of lace on top. Floral scents of yeast, perfume, wheat and citrus are present. The tongue detects a sharp alcoholic citrus like flavor, that includes pears, bananas, earthy spices, seaweed yeast and grain. Brigand is a little bit lighter than other Belgians of it's style. The finish is musty, woody and has a slight hop tinge to it. Brigand Belgian Ale is sort of like Piraat, only not as bombastic.

Monk's in Philly had this on draft during my most recent visit. Having never had it, on draft or in bottle, I had to try it out. Although the lighting in the bar was low, the beer looked to have a medium gold tinge to it. The beer didn't really have much of strong aroma, so struggled to pick up on the smells other reviewers have described here. The beer drinks like a champ though. The bar advertised it as a 9% ABV, but by drinking just one, you really couldn't tell how strong it really was. I pity the fool who tosses back several of these smooth drinkers a little too fast.

Orangeish golden oclour with large white creamy head. Lacing. Aroma is fruity malts along with yeast, spices and slight alcohol. Flavour is yeasty, spicy, fruity, wooden and slightly alcoholic. Very pleasant. Alcohol leaves a nice warming feeling in the throat.

When we drank this ale in Holland it was a experience. One of the best Belgian ales I have Had. When we were in Holland it was very very cold. Therefore the Beer, which is kept in the crawl space under the tavern was exceptionally cold. More so than desired. but still wonderful.

Rootbeer color with a soapy head. Tart, bile, acid aroma. Gives a strange rubberish taste, like i just ate some surgical gloves, very strange bitterness that overpowers the entire feel of the beer.
